Poll question: Novell bought SuSE Linux and Ximian Desktop.
Novell (http://www.novell.com) bought the SuSE Linux distributor (http://www.suse.com/us/private/products/suse_linux/i386/10_reasons.html). They also bought Ximian (http://www.ximian.com/products), a company that makes a highly rated consumer-oriented desktop interface.

Do you think Novell will release a new consumer OS integrating SuSE and Ximian?

1. I'm just trying to understand what the recent shake-ups with
SuSe and RedHat mean to Linux and Microsoft. Some time ago, I read about a politically powerful figure - I think he was a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff - being appointed to RedHat's board of directors. It may be innocent, but I smelled corporate takeover.

And does Novell really intend to throw its weight behind Linux, or is something else going on? I'm not using Linux yet, but I had my sites set on RedHat and/or SuSe.

I can't wait until RedFlag Linux is available! I suspect that product will give Microsoft its stiffest competition yet.

2. Red Hat is ditching the boxed distro and the home market
in favor of "Project Fedora".

No boxed version means you have to download more...

Besides, SuSE's "automatic system recovery" looks very appealing.

Why would Novell buy SuSE and Ximian just to destroy the Linux movement? Novell itself has been wrongfully decimated by Microsoft. (NetWare is superior to any Windows server version.)

I first thought the same when IBM bought into Linux, especially when they mishandled their own OS/2 product...

4. In some ways I'm expecting a major shakeup in the linux distro...
...world, including increasing polarization of the "enterprise" value added distros and the traditional linux user base (and the die-hard open source crowd, like me). It'll be interesting to see where Project Fedora fits in.
