21. 18. I was on the Belle unit when we made the film

but we used a lot of early 20-something actresses as reference. Leslie Caron and Isabelle Adjani are two that I remember using. Adjani made a surprise visit to the studio one afternoon and saw her photo taped to my desk. She got terribly excited, gushing that SHE was now immortalized as a Disney princess. I had to point out all the other photos to ensure that she understood that only elements of her features were being used; she was NOT the sole inspriration for the character. Didn't want a lawsuit over a misperception!

"Beauty" was not only the crown jewel of the modern Disney films, but one of the best movies of the 90's (I'd sandwich it between "Pulp Fiction" and "Silence of the Lambs").

The only other "new" one I dug was "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (directed by the same duo, I believe). Did you have a hand in that one?

No, I had left animation during the making of "the Lion King" (which everyone THOUGHT would turn out to be a real dog for the longest time...).I've got nearly every scrap of production artwork from that one though, as Don Hahn, the Producer, entrusted me with much of the promotional artwork (he also produced "Beauty and the Beast"). I still do a lot of freelance for the company, but it's work on my own terms now (which I prefer).

Unfortunately, there are many pretentious people around here who like to tow the Peter Biskind "Spielberg and Lucas ruined movies" line.
It's not true. The aforementioned filmmakers are, in fact, enormously talented artists--who have the likes of Walt Disney, Charles M. Jones, Howard Hawks, and Sergio Leone as antecedents. That they produce enchanting entertainment for the masses damns them in the eyes of these snobs.

As I understand, Sir Alfred Hitchcock was derided by many critics of the time for the escapist fare he released in the mid-to-late 50's and 60's. We were led to believe "Rear Window," "North by Northwest," "Psycho," and "The Birds" were a step down from earlier works like "Rebecca."

Rubbish.

I grew up with a gal who has been a professional actress on the London stage for twenty years or so now. I always thought that would be something cool to do (I wound up as a lowly sportswriter, which at least means a free lunch coast-to-coast).

but it didn't make it into the final version (I was a character key on that movie, not a visual development artist, so I didn't mind). :-)
