A question for Bengals fans(and other football fanatics)
OK, OK, we've heard it all week. Chad Johnson is guaranteeing a victory against KC this week. My question is what the hell was he thinking!? I mean really now, I understand wanting to pump up your team and the fans and what have you, but there are other ways of doing it. The Bengals only chance to beat KC was to hope they would be overlooked by KC, but all of that went out the window when Johnson opened his mouth. Now you've got Vermeil, the team, the fans all whipped up into a frenzy, and they ain't gonna overlook nothin'. Hell, I would bet good money that Jerome Woods and Dexter McCleon have made it their special mission this week to rip Chad Johnson's head from his body.

Why wake a sleeping giant? It just doesn't make sense.

2. It was a foolish remark
The real question is "will the Chefs be considered a great team after going 17-0 and then losing to the Titans in the AFC Championship game?" :wow:

4. Sorry, but those days are over
Schottenheimer now coaches in San Diego now, and we have a kicker this year. But I agree, it will probably be the Chiefs and the Titans in the AFC Championship. But the Chiefs have too many weapons. Are you going to kick it to Hall, or just spot the Chiefs good field position? Are you going to stack the box and get burned deep? Are you going to go 3-4 and watch Priest run all over you? Are you going to go 4-3 and watch Gonzalez dunking the ball in the end zone. And hey, we've got a D this year. Many many problems for Chiefs opponents, will anyone have the answers?

7. Denver is the answer to all that
Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 05:01 AM by VermontDem2004
Denver has the 5th best defense in the NFL as far as KC having a defense, they are the 8th worst defense in the NFL. They are very vulnerable on defense. Denver held Holmes to under 100 yards no touchdowns and held Green to almost 50% of his passes completed and only 128 passing yards and an inteception. They were ahead the entire game until Dante Hall sprang free for 93 yard touchdown which was aided by a block in the back but I can't complain, many calls don't go your way in a football game But the Chiefs managed to win by one point at home. If it wasn't for numerous injuries the Broncos would be right behind the Chiefs in the AFC West division. Unless the SI Cover Jinx plagues the Chiefs like it plagued the Broncos there is no way KC is loosing that division, but If the Broncos and Chiefs stay healthy I can really see a divisional playoff or AFC championship game against the two.

3. Could be a tough game
The Bungles have been playing well recently, its on the road, KC is on the cover of SI (eek!) and "On Any Given Sunday..." and all that.

5. That comment absolutely helps the Bengals
I'm admittedly biased and somewhat desperate, as a Dolphins season ticket holder from '72 who would be much more at ease if the Chiefs had an entry in their loss column.

But I completely disagree with the general impression that Chad Johnson's comment was foolish and masochistic. On the road, yes. But for a home game vs. an unbeaten foe a crack like that can only inspire the team and city to rally behind the player and his positive outspoken remark. As a daily sports bettor, one of my best angles is taking motivated home teams vs. a road team that supposedly wants a piece of them. It seldom fails.

KC was never going to take Cincy lightly. But Vermeil's team, similar to his '99 Ram squad, is defensively vulnerable and hardly a juggernaut away from home. The Chiefs have only defeated expansion Houston handily away from Arrowhead. Even with a rookie QB, the Ravens had two TDs called back by penalty, yet still were tied 10-10 before Hall's late TD kickoff return. KC was flat out lucky on the road as the braindead Packers forfeited a 31-14 4th quarter lead to lose in OT, and Oakland came up a half yard short at home on Monday night.

A healthy Broncos squad will squash the Chiefs in December. But I'm hoping someone else will take care of the "O" before then.

6. I agree
Cinncinatti is not a bad team and could have the best of Kansas City, plus they only team they were blown out against was Denver, every other team they faced they were in it all the way and beat some solid teams such as Seattle and Baltimore. Also don't forget the Chiefs won against Denver by one point at home(also Denver outgained KC in total yards by almost 2x) and lost by one yard to Oakland. By then Plummer and McCaffery should be healthy by then and should be able to beat Kansas City on their home field. Denver is not a bad team, the last 4 games they had atleast 6 injuries and even 16 starters and backup starters injured for most of the Baltimore game. Denver was in it (score wise) in the last 4 games. But Kansas City is not a very great road team. But I have to say this, I hated Kansas City in the past and will continue to hate them in the future but I just can't hate Vermeil, he is one of my favorite coaches in the league.

8. Likewise, I agree
An article by Dick Vermeil in Inside Sports magazine, summer '87, was the best source I have ever seen for listing the most relevant NFL stats. It has been invaluable to me.

Denver was my Super Bowl pick from the AFC. And minus the injuries I'm sure they would have at least 1, and probably 2 or 3, fewer losses. The missing LBers, Mobley and Gold, are the key besides QB. New England exploited the replacements on every scoring drive.

I don't hate the Chiefs, just annually the final unbeaten team. And when it extends beyond mid-October I'm especially ticked.

9. Denver could still do make the Super Bowl
Oakland lost 4 in a row last year and still made it to the Super Bowl, plus if the season ended today the Broncos would be in the playoffs. But it is tough to win games without your starting or backup QB and they had key injuries all over. New England didn't really exploit them on the final drive, two of them were in the backfield ready to sack Brady but he throws the screen pass for 19 yards, two plays later they did exploit the ROLB because there was a hole in the screen and completed for I think 15 yards. The next play they threw right in the direction of Deltha O'Neal who can't cover shit, Denver moved up to the #4 spot during this week. Kanell did alright but could've done better and Lelie should've caught that pass for the first down.
