I have high hopes for this. And on the low-hopes flipside, I hope that it's better than Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues, which kind of sucked.

If I am terribly disappointed, I'll just get drunk and watch Don't Look Back again.

1. I bet it will be great.
But if it is terrible, I'll be drunk watching Don't Look Back in solidarity with you.

2. I read a preview
And it seems the best qualities going for it are the sound, and the rare footage. The drawbacks are it lacks the background on HOW he changed music - not enough analysis.

I am eager to see it, but will keep my expectations reasonably mild.

3. I have a bootleg DVD of "Eat the Document" at my house....
I was at some video store the other day, and the Scorsese doc was playing (apparently it's already out on DVD before it hits PBS, or they got a screener copy), and most of the rare footage was culled from Eat the Document, from what I could see. Then again, I was only there for twenty minutes :)

I hope there's some footage from his Isle of Wight perf from 1970, and some stuff from the 74 tour.

4. Based on what I read...
This segment only goes from 1960-65, which explains the 'Eat The Document' footage, and the obligatory 'Don't Look Back' footage.

that it's great, very moving. A bit of the story you get from Chronicles, particularly the Hibbing, MN, and later off-the-bus in the Village parts, but told visually and musically in a compelling way. So good, really.

Among my favorite moments: Muddy Waters doing, "Got My Mojo Workin'," the Warhol screen-tests, the Alan Ginsberg peer review, obviously filmed shortly before Ginsberg's death, the "Judas/Liar/Play it Fuckin' Loud" moment from the Royal Albert Hall fragment from 1966 (see disc pictured below), which closes the film.

Really, I'm not doing the sprawling thing justice.

Unlike what had been implied a year ago, Dylan does a lot of talking an acts as the on-screen narrator for the whole deal, which includes such raw moments as his defection from Joan Baez during the tour that was documented in Don't Look Back. I guess the murdering of Donovan with "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," was apparent enough in the original film to warrant its omission here.

Anyway, good show if you like that kind of shit. And I do.

on edit: oh, image of promised tangentially related disc promised above.
