Zappa Fans- I jammed w/ Ike Willis, Napoleon Murphy-Brock and Don Preston!
Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 12:11 AM by stlsaxman
Last night here in "the loo". I had the honor of playing on Zappas "Black Napkins".
I grew up with Ike here and he insisted I bring my sax to his
concert with the Zappa tribute band Project Object. Seen them before
with Ike but this time they had Napi and Don, too! Don Preston did a
beautiful solo version of "Momma Momma" that had folks nearly in tears...
but it was Ikes birthday and you could just "feel the love"...

so here's a pic of my solo on "les serviette nuoire" -

1. No Shit!
Wow! What was the setlist? Was Nappy a cool guy? You grew up with Ike Willis??? Oh my god, the room is spinning...what was he like growing up? I've just got too many questions; I'm a total Zappa freak and this is like throwing a bag of thawed steak-umms to a german shepard....Holy shit....

7. yeah- NMBrock is one sweet guy...
here i was in awe of this guys playing and that incredible voice, and after my
solo he came up to me and said- "Man, that was beautiful!"... all I could think of
to say was "Thank you- I wish i was around to hear it but I was elsewhere..."
and he said "yeah, i could tell!"....

I grew up in LaClede Town in stlouis and Ike was my best and first real friend.
He turned me on to electric guitar... i played acoustic. We loved music. It
was all we wanted to do. He, my brother and myself hung out a lot at this coffeehouse
that had a rock band living above it. We were little kids, but we were impressed
enough that it convinced us that there was/is nothing greater than music.

2. How cool!
Glad to see they're looking healthy.

I'll confess, as much as I've loved Zappa over the years, one of the most appealing things about his stuff for me was always Ike's voice. Every now and then, on VH-1 Classic, they show the video for 'You Are What You Is.' I always have to stop what I'm doing and watch.

My younger brother (who played keyboards in a band that covered 'Tinseltown Rebellion' back in the hair-metal era) used to call me on the phone and say 'boilin' water kills germs. Yup!*' and hang up.

*an aside from Ike on a song called 'Baby Take Your Teeth Out' that's about, yes, exactly what you'd think a song called 'Baby Take Your Teeth Out' would be about if Zappa did it.

3. Hey stlsaxman, way kewl!
I wish you had PM me I'm out of the loop about music in St Louis but would have come down to the show. Next time maybe! Hi from St Louis:hi:
BTW wasn't the strike stuff just too funny when it played out in the paper? A good friend of mine is a reporter and we had some great conversations. Johnny's was a pain but worth it I might add. Found an off brand of delicious cookies at Hanneke's.
Cheers!

But also super glad for you!

What a treat it must have been. Ike and Napolean! Don, too, but I'm totally into Napolean.

Always wondered what he did after Zappa, and why he never rejoined the band. What a talent!

YOU ROCK! I bow to you!

12. I attended The Prisoner Convention at the Portmeirion "Village"
in March this year... it was my Mecca... very, very cool!

Number Six: "... the whole world, as The Village?"
Number Two: "That is my hope. What is yours, Number Six?"
Number Six: "I'd like to be the first man on the moon."

... but sadly, it IS becoming "The Village"

"Be Seeing You"
