Great, and I mean GREAT music moments in movies.
Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 08:06 PM by CanuckAmok
You know when the music is just as powerful/memorable as the images and dialogue?

The first four which spring to my mind are:

"Give UP" from "Magnolia". It's ALMOST sappy, but not quite.

"Baba O'Reily" montage in "Summer of Sam". The power of the Who and the power of Spike Lee's knack for the visual...

"Where is My Mind?", at the end of "Fight Club". Kaboom.

"In Your Eyes", in "Say Anything". What teenaged girl didn't fall in love with John Cusack balancing that boombox on his head?

It was also used in Amelie.

Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 08:25 PM by D__S

Okay... the Gene Kelly version was good too, but let me see him trying to dance with Doc Martins on?

The lip-sync scene to Roy Orbisons "In Dreams/Candy Colored Clown" in "Blue Velvet" with Dean Stockwell and Dennis Hopper was pretty good too.

4. In Amadeus:
Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 08:36 PM by bertha katzenengel
In the beginning, when Salieri is describing to his confessor the music he'd heard at the Royal Archbishop's palace... "like a rusty squeezebox. And then . . . high above it . . . an oboe . . . a single note, hanging there, unwavering . . . until a clarinet took it over and sweetened it into a phrase of such delight . . ." oh, god, no wonder that's one of the best movies ever made.

edited to add this photo of F. Murray Abraham as Antonio Salieri

53. Mozart's Grand Partita
for winds.

As a clarinet player it's always been one of my favorite pieces. It's a real, honest to goodness masterpiece. It's just as mature, complex, and beautiful as any of his compositions but because it's a wind piece it doesn't get played that much.

I'm like you, I was bowled over when I first saw this scene with Salieri's voice over while you see Mozart conducting the Grand Partita.

Check out the recording of this piece performed by the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. They are, for the most part, the principal wind players from the Concertebow Orchestra.

As Mozart is being buried, his unfinished funeral Mass being played.

To highlights of a musically wonderful film. Also, worth noting that they didn't change a single note of his music; it's all original.

6. "Good Morning, Vietnam"
Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 08:34 PM by DemoTex
AFVN redux. I was post-Cronauer, but I knew AFVN-star Cris Noel very well. She dated the married flight surgeon of NAF Cam Rahn Bay. She often partied with us at the famed NAF Cam Rahn "O" Club. She often made risque remarks on the air about Capt. Wendell E.'s door knocker .. a carved 15" penis with complete lower works (the balls actually did the knocking, the crank was the handle). It was a sight. She was too! Vietnam was rock-and-roll. Rock-and-roll was Vietnam.

11. Still is, as far as I know.
Last I heard, Adrian was living in Pennsylvania. He had really done a gig in Crete, too, before getting stationed in RVN. Robin Williams was fairly true to the life script of Adrian Cronauer. There is a cameo in the great movie Hamburger Hill of Adrian Cronauer's famous wake up call: "Gooooood Morning Viet Nam!" It was as real as a stonk of mortar rounds.

20. A lot of the tunes from Alexander Nevsky are fucking brilliant
Even though it was a cheesy propaganda film in some ways, Eisenstein was such a genius, and Prokofiev's score is so absolutely superb that it's very enjoyable even as it drags around. The music backing Alexander's entry into Pskov is just one of the most incredible moments of musical catharsis I've seen in film. Also the backing for the Teutonic knights is effectively malevolent and properly evocative of nasty Roman Catholic imperialism. :P

the music in the scene when they first see the dinosaur, is incredible in it's majesty and it fits perfectly. the second is when they see the tricertops. the music is simple, almost a variation of "it's a small world" and it's brillant. it captures perfectly grant and elle's wonderment of being up close and personal "the most beautiful creature i've ever seen."

Almost a cliche now but Excalibur did it first.

Mad Love from the end of Donnie Darko

The driving in the rain sequence from Psycho where the music creates ALL of the suspense.

Beethoven's ninth, second movement, montage sequence from A Clockwork Orange.

The entire Bernard Herrman (sp) soundtrack from Taxi Driver which he finished one night and then went home and died.

The music, I think it was Ligetti when the second monolith is found in 2001: A Space Odysey.

Wendy Carlos's version of the Deus Irae used at the beginning of The Shining.

The organ arrangement of Beethoven's 7th, second movement, used for the opening of Zardoz.

OK, I am into movie music a bit too much I guess. :-)

69. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
near the end, when they finally find the cemetary, and Ugly is running through it trying to find the marker with the correct name - out of thousands of markers that extend to the horizon.

Ennio Moricone wrote the soundtrack, the tune played at this point is titled "amor del oro", or "the love of gold".

72. yes, yes indeed
and also the final music (all of it actually) from Once upon a Time in the West.

Morricone is a god. He has scored 533 movies since 1961. It boggles the mind sometimes how much great music he has written.

I could not imagine Leone's films without Morricone's music.

70. 2 moments in the movie "Glory" with the same theme music
One is where the regiment, finally wearing their uniforms, marches through the streets going off to war and the crowds come out to cheer them. The other is the moment when the regiment marches towards Fort Wagner between lines of white Union troops, as we approach the climactic last charge.

Another worth mentioning is the Love Theme From El Cid. El Cid is one of my favorite films of all time for its sheer entertainment value. The moment when the Rodrigo and Chimena realize they love each other and can't live without each other and that hopelessly beautiful Spanish sounding music comes on it just makes me thankful I have ears to hear.

71. A few sf/fantasy references
"Star Trek: The Motion Picture"--The majestic Jerry Goldsmith music that accompanies the fly-by inspection of the refitted Enterprise.

"Legend" (Director's Cut)--Another Goldsmith triumph: a sweeping ballet chronicling a maiden's slide into darkness.

"Star Wars: The Phantom Menace"--John William's operatic "Duel of the Fates," set to the battle between the Jedi and Darth Maul.

73. In "Goodfellas," when they're killin' Billy Batts....
The sweet strains of Donovan's "Atlantis" serve as a glorious counterpart to the violence.

75. scenes while the band is rehearsing, from "The Commitments"
Particularly the parts where the individual musicians are trying to practice, as they cope with overcrowded quarters, boisterous family members, etc.

77. Hunt for Red October, when the crew is singing
Still gives me chills. Of course, the moment from... "Up Periscope", is it, where they all sing "Louie Louie" is pretty good too! ;-)

80. The balcony scene in Zefferli's Romeo and Juliet..
My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love is deep; the more I give to thee,
The more I have, for both are infinite.

84. "Needle In The Hay" - The Royal Tenenbaums
When Richie changes his appearance deliberately and dramatically while Elliot Smith's Needle in the Hay floats in the air is amazingly haunting:

needle in the hay

your hand on his arm
the hay stack charm around your neck
strung out and thin
calling some friend trying to cash some check
he's acting dumb
that's what you've come to expect
needle in the hay

. . .
