Today may be the last day of my job |
|
I've been here nearly eight years, and the company is "merging with" (read being bought out by) a bigger player in the field.
On Monday 11/17 the shareholders will approve the merger, which will be effective immediately. I'm taking Monday and Tuesday off to watch the meteor showers in the desert. :D
Wish me luck. I am prepared for any of the various possible outcomes, the worst of which is I show up on Wednesday to find they've locked me out of all the computer systems and packed up my stuff.

2. I'm waiting for the day |
|
when it all erupts and fired employees start destroying the offices of the employers who fired them.
It's only fair. If you have the right to take away my livlihood, I have the right to take away yours....

6. Merger and acquisitions hurt everybody. |
|
Workers get laid off, competition is reduced, shareholders invariably lose money (the acquiring shareholders anyway). The only ones who make money are the executives and the financiers.
AOL-Time Warner, Qwest-USWest, HP-Compaq, the list goes on and on.
Good luck.

10. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park |
|
Largest state park in California. My friends and I like to watch the showers from a little sheltered valley between the towns of Ranchita and Borrego Springs.
It should be really interesting out there. Some areas we've never been able to get into were burned out by the Pines fire last year. Many new hiking opportunities opened up.

9. No rush (not the junkie) to worry |
|
Things will probably take time to iron out, at least a few months. Start looking for something new now!
Remember this: Come payday, every employer knows that you’re even, Yet most employees refuse to realize it.
If your really worried, then take the attitude you don’t own them anything.
Good Luck!!

11. My first layoff experience happened in December 1981 |
|
I've been through several. It's never pleasant, but on the plus side I learned at an early age there's no such thing as the traditional Ward Cleaver job that you keep for 30 years and retire from. That may have been a reality for some people in the past, and it may be that way in Japan, but not in 21st Century California.
I usually come out ahead after corporate re-shuffling.

14. I work for a HUGE insurance co that is |
|
supposed to get even bigger by next summer, if all the regulatory agencies approve the merger deal. The CEO of the company I work for stands to gain very handsomely that's for sure. We just got an e mail today saying they will no longer have a pension fund for those whose years of service plus their age does not add up to 65. Of course when this "merger" deal was announced my manager told us not to worry, that there would be no layoffs. Yeah right. How can they really expect us to believe that? Do they think we don't read the papers and watch tne news? Oh wait most people DON'T read the paper (even the pResident) or watch the news. I, too, look forward to the day when employees who are getting laid off strike back instead of saying to one another "this is a good opportunity, blah, blah blah." The corporados count on our complacency. I hope you have a job come Wednesday.

early. What an awful time to be laying people off. These corporations have no soul at all anymore. At least in my day they waited until January.
