Keep your knees slightly bent. You can keep your balance much better that way. Same goes for skating.

I haven't skated seriously since 1998 or so. At my ripe age of 29, I'm liable to break something seriously.

Keep it up. Very few things in my life give me as much pleasure as skating. Besides the obvious, family, friends, surfing....
Falling will happen, and continue to happen as you get better.
