71. DCW is top notch
the first song kind of throws the listener for a loop, but barring the other members' contributions(only two, but JEEZ - :puke:) the record's actually one of their strongest efforts. the last track, Stay Loose, is among my favorite B&S songs . . . "I'm a Cuckoo" is utter radio fodder and borrows liberally from Thin Lizzy's "The Boys are Back in Town" without really impressing you as plagiary. in conclusion, you should definitely get it unless you have a cable connection ;)

6. Currently
m83 - Dead Cities, Red Seas, and Lost Ghosts.

It's the best album of the year, imho. Anyone who likes My Bloody Valentine MUST check this out, it *IS* the new "Loveless". :)

Dead cities was surprisingly good, although it kinda lags in the middle, i think. "Run into Flowers" is one of the best songs ive heard this year.

25. I've always......
... had trouble deciding between Low and Heroes. I picked Low to list here because it was first :) Same with Taking Tiger Mountain vs. Another Green World. Both are 10/10.

I was a mega-fan of Cocteau Twins, even saw them twice here in Dallas. Everything from Garlands to Heaven or Las Vegas is great, after that they were kinda over.

Liz is singing with Massive Attack tho!

27. Low is more downbeat, Heroes more bouncy.
Depends on mood. Both are timeless. I like Eno's solo stuff, but I'm no expert, 'Here come the Warm Jets' is good. As for the Cocteaus, I love Treasure the most and struggled through Four Calendar Cafe. They lost me with Milk and Kisses. Good to hear Liz on Lord of the Rings, though. She always sounded like an elf to me!

Did you think Geogaddi was a disappointment? It seems to be the same formula minus the Great melodies of MHTRTC.

Nice choices.

23. No....
... I like Geogaddi, but I liked MHTRTC more :) Actually, Twoism is very good and Hi Scores might be their best, but it is kinda short.

I chose Music has the Right simply because if you like it, you like BoC - it is fairly "representative".

38. The Best Albums I Can Think Of

Before and After Science -- Brian Eno
Teenager of the Year -- Frank Black
Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters -- HH and the HH
Come on Pilgrim -- The Pixies
Low -- David Bowie
I Care Because You Do -- Aphex Twin
No Pussyfooting -- Robert Fripp
The Best of Parliament -- Parliament
Disintigration -- The Cure

These aren't necessarily the 'best', but you will be very satisfied if you buy any (especially the first, it will guarantee you buy more of his stuff)

41. U2 - Unforgettable Fire
Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 07:34 PM by Kamika
This album is hard to describe...

There are songs on it that makes you see waste fields.. or people torn by war.. my description sounds like im high on drugs but it's only because im pretty sick right now, and as I said it's hard to describe.

The title refers to the bomb dropped on Hiroshima

46. Watercolors...Great pick.
Can't remember who...maybe Eno....anyways, someone once described Unforgettable Fire as a watercolor painting, and now that's what I think of everytime I listen to it.

LOVE Promenade and Elvis Presley and America....MLK...Sort of Homecoming...title track....LOL, that's like half the CD there.

Bad is one of my all time fave U2 songs. The whole album is wonderful--and not really dated, considering how old it is.

45. Soul Coughing--Irresistible Bliss, Grace--Jeff Buckley, Little Earthquakes
by Tori Amos...

Let me tell you people something.

Soul Coughing was one funky ass band. Super Bonbon, awesome. How Many Cans, awesome. Don't know if it's one of my all time faves, but I've not met many people who know Soul Coughing and how cool they are.

I've mentioned poor Jeff many times here. Great talent, great voice.

Tori Amos, LOL, for me, is not as weird as Kate Bush and not as MTV as Fiona Apple.

Also...anything by U2...Van Morrison...Under the Table and Dreaming by Dave Matthews Band (only one of their CDs I like every single song on)...lots of 'older' CDs too....music is really neat, isn't it?

49. These records make me happy:
-Pixies "Surfer Rosa"
-Gibson Bros. "Dedicated Fool"
-Love "Forever Changes"
-John Coltrane "Live in Japan"
-Neutral Milk Hotel "In the Aeroplane over the Sea"
-Sly & the Family Stone "Dance to the Music" (actually, "Riot" is my favorite Sly, but it's already been mentioned several times).
-Bassholes "Blue Roots"
-Wire "Pink Flag"
-John Fahey "The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death"
-Great Plains "Born in a Barn"

And, of course, the most important collection of all, the one set NO collection is complete without: Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music.

I'm surprised (considering the good taste in music demonstrated by so many DUers) than I haven't seen Love and Neutral Milk Hotel mentioned more often here. Great, great stuff.

And yes, I'm fully aware that there's probably too much Ohio music on my list. Sue me.

54. Good lord, you people do have some great taste in music...
Right now I have some Black Heart Procession playing on my computer, fantastic depressing music it is.

So many bands I would've mentioned myself: Interpol (can't stop listening to that album), Cocteau Twins (they never should've split), Echo and the Bunnymen, Jeff Buckley, and on an on....

I have to admit, though, as much, as I like David Bowie, I've never been able to get into the album Low. Don't know why.

By the way, anybody hear anything else about the planned Pixies reunion (I nearly hit the ceiling when I hear about it)? I think I may to kill myself if it doesn't occur.

57. Pixies reunion; yes!
I'm usually cynical about such things, except

a) it's the friggin Pixies,

b) they're puuting a new album out, which doesn't equal a grab-the-cash reunion run, and

c) they reportedly got along personally, so there's no rapport to re-establish.

BTW, I really like Black Heart Procession. Saw Three Mile Pilot live once too, and they were phenomenal. It's amazing that such introspective, depressive music could come from San Diego.

68. Are there no Stan Ridgway fans here?
If you like rich arrangements and clever lyrics, Stan's your man. I have just about everything he's ever done, but would highly recommend The Big Heat, Mosquitos, and Partyball.

And I'm stunned that no one has mentioned Midnight Oil. Try Earth Sun Moon, Blue Sky Mining, or Diesel and Dust.

Other favorites of mine:

Lloyd Cole & the Commotions, 1984-1989
Stevie Nicks - Street Angel, Trouble in Shangri-La
Tom Petty - Wildflowers, She's the One soundtrack
Aerosmith - Rocks
Fine Young Cannibals - The Finest
The Cult - High Octane
Robert Plant - Pictures at Eleven, Principle of Moments, Now and Zen, Fate of Nations
Dire Straits - Dire Straits

73. "Stairways to Heaven"
It's an album of covers of Stairway to Heaven by Australian Bands. Many of them are tribute bands, and they do incredible jobs in setting the lyrics and the general feel of the song (not always the same chords and notes, but enough that it stays faithful to the feel of the original). The Australian Doors Band and the Rock Lobsters (B-52's tribute band) are the highlights, but there are a few Beatles-type covers (one by The Beatnix), a Vegas-era Elvis setting, a terrific operatic setting, reggae, alternative, and ending with an accompanied spoken word rendition (a la Nights in White Satin).

Go out now and buy this album.
