Poll question: What should the topic of my 30,000th DU post be?
In keeping with the odometer mentality that compelled me to drive very slowly and watch my car complete its 100,000th mile in sedate splendor, I notice that this is my 29,999th post on DU since first signing up in early 2002. In that 3.5 years, I've probably made between 300 and 3,000 (depending on who's counting) posts that were worth reading. I'm not really sure whether that's above or below average. The subjects of those posts, mostly in General Discussion (yeah, I'm a masochist) have included Viet Nam, the draft, income distribution, unemployment, Social Security, ethics (especially deontological v. teleological), corporatism, voting, and a variety of other topics about which I know little enough to fit into a post short enough for the average DUer's (of which I'm one) attention span. Those posts also included many in the moderator's forum during the six months it was my privilege to serve.

So, I'm a bit perplexed. The 30,000th should be somehow symbolic, it seems to me. So, I solicit the advice of DUers. Just WTF should it be?

How say you?

(Please note: Until this critical dilemma is resolved, I just can't post ... even to reply in this thread. After all, to do so would make this thread moot, wouldn't it?)

1. It should be an overly dramatic "Goodbye to DU" post

Just kidding!

so you should, instead, give me money.

4. Well, I voted for a rant on the intolerances, but on second thought, that
seems a little intolerant.

why is bashing them or (ranting about them) considered tolerant?

17. Well, the honeymoon is over. (Post #30,000 is a time for retrospective.)
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 07:18 PM by TahitiNut
Here's the happy, satisfied bride, the former TahitiNutess, on the beach at Montego Bay, Jamaica, on our honeymoon in 1972. Cute, huh?

Here're the happy couple a couple of days before, leaving from the airport on the morning after the wedding, on our way to Jamaica via Miami. Yes, that's me on the left - the taller, hirsute one. Cute, huh?

Roll the calendar back nearly two years to the summer of 1970. Gaze upon the Viet Nam Veteran taking his solo motorcycle trip north of Lake Superior. I was about eight months out of Nam, pretty freaky, and having gained back about 20 pounds of muscle (between the ears) and losing about 105 pounds of ugly fat (the first wife). Cute, huh?

(sigh) Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

The fact that this thread dropped like a stone due to an apparent lack of interest offers me little motivation to invest much time in this post.

22. I tried to answer.
I wrote a long reply. But I got a weird bug when I tried to post, and all was lost. It was late & I decided that was a sign from God telling me it was bedtime.

Dig the tie in the honeymoon photo.

25. I really loved that tie. The design was woven into it.
I've never seen one like it since. Not quite a knit, it was a fine-textured weave almost like a tapestry, and had a finely 'rippled' surface like micro-corduroy. I'm really not a "tie kinda guy" but that one was comfortable, tasteful, knotted easily (reverse Windsor), draped nicely, and was unique.

I guess I'm rather strange to remember a tie even after more than 32 years. :dunce:

26. Well, I almost took a third bite at the apple ...
... 13 years ago, but she recovered her sanity and we parted friends.

So, the picket fence and Leave It To Beaver lifestyle just wasn't in the cards for me, I guess.

I have a very good (female) friend and we talk about "growing old together" (as companions) when our other familial obligations are concluded. I kinda like that idea.
