5. That is a haunting song...I heard Rufus Wainwright's version on
the radio one day and it actually gave me chills.

I haven't heard Jeff Buckley's version. You know Leonard Cohen wrote that song...not Jeff Buckley.

On a side note...the world lost an amazing musician and song writer the day Jeff Buckley left us. What a talent.

9. I did not know that Leonard Cohen wrote that song that's very interesting.
And I do agree the world did lose a very talented and magnificent artists when Mr. Buckley passed.

8. Hi KW - Albert Collins, Ice Pickin

When The Welfare Turns Its Back On You

Now what you gonna do, when the welfare turn it's back on you?
Now what you gonna do-hoo-hoo-hoo, when the welfare turn it's back on you
Now, you be standin' there stranded, there's ain't a thing that you can do

Now you look all through your house, yes, you can't, find a piece of bread
Now you look all through your hou-hou-house, yeah, you can't find a piece of bread
Sometime you begin to wonder, if you be better off, better off, dead

You go down to the welfare
Give 'em one, two report
Something they sellin' you
Will surely get your goat

If you tell 'em you sick
You better have a bad cough
'Cause if you don't
They be ready to throw you off

What you gonna do, when the welfare turns it's back on you?
You be standin' there stranded,
There ain't a thing, there ain't a thing you
There ain't a thing-hing-hing-hing-hing,
that you can do

10. Liz Phair - Somebody's Miracle
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 01:30 PM by mvd
It's a masterpiece IMO! Poppy, but more complex than her self-titled CD. I'm not surprised I disagree with reviewers like Sheffield from Rolling Stone (who's not a good reviewer to begin with.)

Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine: I'm not going to give a final opinion yet, but on 2 listens, I only love "O' Sailor" and "Parting Gift." Not enough to buy, unlike with her other two CDs.

Earlier, Anna Nalick - Wreck Of The Day, Bob Dylan, and Green Day - American Idiot.

The Liz and Fiona CDs were heard on full album listening parties.

14. Hey MVD
You can't buy Extraordinary Machine - it was never released. But you can download the whole thing for free.

The whole thing is really good, if a little odd. I highly recommend "Get Him Back" and "Used To Love Him".

"Waltz" is so damn sweet and upbeat and cool that it even makes me feel good.

I don't have the link to download the entire album, but if you go to Mark Morford's column on SFgate.com (The Fiona Aplle column in the archives) he gives it.

I'll give it another listen or two, but I have heard the full CD. It's not like I wasn't impressed just based on samples.

25. Well, Fiona's Fiona, so I might end up liking it
The first song is cute - "Extraordinary Machine." Reminds me a bit of 40s songs, with a modern twist. Many of the songs just didn't seem to go anywhere to me, but Fiona's not an artist you always get right away. I didn't love When The Pawn.. at first.

26. Yeah, often there are one or two you really like
and you don't really appreciate the rest until the third or fourth listening. Sign of a good artist to me.

Marilyn Manson's cover of "Sweet Dreams (are made of this)" from Lest We Forget.

"I'm gonna use you, I'm gonna abuse you, I'm gonna find out what's inside......you"

Soon to be followed by Diamanda Galas' "I Put A Spell On You" (that girl scares me)

28. Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill (Acoustic)
I was suprised when I picked this up a month or so back that I remembered all the lyrics despite having lent the original to a friend in about 1998 & never getting it back.
