My pets are coming!
I'm getting rats in a week or two. I ordered a nice big cage from Martin's Cages (www.martinscages.com), the more or less unanimously supported cage vendor for pet rat owners (although they make good ferret and bird cages), and the stuff shipped this morning! Assuming I get the cages by the end of the week, by Saturday I'll be welcoming two (or more?) new rats to my home!

1. Yay!
I looooove ratties! I had 5 girls who have all sadly passed on now. I miss them a lot. I don't need any more pets now, but I will ALWAYS be a rat owner - just not sure when I'll be ready for more. Someday...

The worst thing about having rats is their short life span. It was very sad to watch mine all go -

Great cage! :)

4. I agree
about the worst thing being the short life span. I can't have rats or mice anymore, it's too painful to get attached to something and have them get sick and die so quickly. We had to deal with the death of 7 rodents in a span of 3 years. My partners first rat lived to be 5 years old which is really amazing.
Right now we are sticking with Cats, Turtles, Fish, Parakeets and Hermit Crabs which are not having a very long lifespan either but I can't seem to get that attached to them although they are cool to look at.

2. Intelligent critters.
Once I slept over after a party on the couch at a rather grotty friend's house. I woke in the night to find a litte rat-face carefully studying mine. There were a bunch of them and they all came up and "said hello" before getting on with the work of cleaning the floor. I've always hated killing rats since then.

3. if that was me
they would have needed to professionally clean the couch, and get a new rat....

Rats... I know, it's an irrational fear, but they scare me. I once ran a parsec when I opened the horse feed bin to find 500,000 of those things seething in the grain like furry maggots.

5. Rats, especially pet rats, are REALLY underappreciated
When treated properly and raised as pets, rats, can be just as affectionate and intelligent as dogs or cats. They can understand commands, learn tricks, and will treat their owners with just as much love and loyalty as "conventional" pets.
