Musicians: Which songs should go on this CD? |
|
I am trying to put together a live recording CD to benefit Katrina victims. I have some talented young folks willing to give their time.
I need ideas for acoustic songs to teach the youngsters. What would you put on a live "acoustic" CD?
Help!

I won't be around til late tonight and I really need to go fix fence. Any and all suggestions and kicks for the late-wakers are appreciated.
I have a ton of songbooks but I'm looking for something to spark the kids. To increase their knowledge of acoustic music. And I am open to "non-acoustic" songs done acoustically if that helps :)

Really, any song about loss and pain, hardship, etc. There are tons more. What do you have so far?

19. not the erie canal song |
|
That's the one that goes, sixteen miles on the erie canal.
This is about working in coal mines and was written by Merle Travis and sung, as previously stated, but Tennesse Ernie Ford.
I have a fascination with Merle Travis, who was one hell of a guitar player, becaus he helped my grandfather learn to play guitar and my grandfather helped me to learn. My dad remembers him coming by when they lived in Cincinnati.
Sixteen Tons
Some people say a man is made outta mud A poor man's made outta muscle and blood Muscle and blood and skin and bones A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong
You load sixteen tons, what do you get Another day older and deeper in debt Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go I owe my soul to the company store
I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal And the straw boss said "Well, a-bless my soul"
You load sixteen tons, what do you get Another day older and deeper in debt Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go I owe my soul to the company store
I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain Fightin' and trouble are my middle name I was raised in the canebrake by an ol' mama lion Cain't no-a high-toned woman make me walk the line
You load sixteen tons, what do you get Another day older and deeper in debt Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go I owe my soul to the company store
If you see me comin', better step aside A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died One fist of iron, the other of steel If the right one don't a-get you Then the left one will
You load sixteen tons, what do you get Another day older and deeper in debt Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go I owe my soul to the company store

41. Merle Travis, also one of the greatest songwriters ever |
|
"Sixteen Tons" (a top-ten all-time American song IMHO)
“So Round, So Firm, So Fully Packed”
"Smoke Smoke Smoke (That Cigarette)"
and a bunch more.
AND, as you said one of the greatest, most influential guitarists of all time. He made electric guitar a staple in country music.

Haven't chatted in a little while. :hi:
I'm off to bed but I like your choices. "Smoke smoke smoke that cigarette" describes me to a T lately. Geez Wheezy Louise. I need to go to one of those spas and regroup and quit while I'm getting toe massages and mud facials.
But that song makes me think of "King of the Road."
I'm also thinking of "Everybody's cryin' Mercy" as done by Bonnie Raitt. Thanks for all your suggestions. :)

Don't get me started on Roger Miller . . . Try some of Big River if you can find it.
I'm doing better now than I have been for a long time. Knock on wood . . . Thanks for asking.
You really should go to a spa. Get some serious TLC and quit smoking. TLC optional. They call 'em coffin nails for a reason ya know.
Sleep well.

I have only "Passin through" (Scruggs and Cash)
and maybe "Our Town" by Iris Dement. I thought about Fogerty's "Deja Vu all over again" too.
Thanks for your suggestions.

15. A few suggestions... (these may be a little obscure) |
|
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 12:10 PM by primate1
Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros (or Bob Marley, if you prefer) - "Redemption Song"
Bright Eyes - "Old Soul Song"; "First Day of My Life" (a lot more Bright Eyes songs would be great, but those are my favourites)
Damien Rice - "Delicate"
Iron and Wine - "Such Great Heights"; "Woman King"
Wintersleep - "Snowstorm"; "Assembly Lines"
Anything by Nikola Sarcevic or The Lost Patrol might be worth checking out as well.
And acoustic covers of traditionally non-acoustic songs are usually pretty cool. Try to find an album called "Even Better Than The Real Thing Vol. 1". It's all acoustic covers of pop songs, done by Irish indie folk artists. Really cool stuff.

Just about anything by Bob Dylan has only 3 chords also.
And don't forget about the copyright laws.

30. Yeah, three chord songs rule |
|
but some of these "kids" have their own bands. So they may teach me a thing or two.....
And, yes, we will get permission to use any songs, but I'd love to find some old cool folk tunes that are copyright free.
Or maybe I could write some gawdawful stuff.....oh, never mind...:(

34. "Teach Your Children" by CSNY (a little too obvious, maybe?) |
|
Very simple chord progression, and fairly simple lyrics with the possiblity for some harmonies, if the kids are able to do them.
However it may be a bit too obvious as a choice.

The Circle Game - Joni Mitchell Delta Dawn - Bette Miller & Others Home Again; You've Got A Friend - Carole King Shower The People - James Taylor (Look for )America - Simon and Garfunkel Everybody Is A Star; Everday People - Sly & Family Stone Closer To Home - Grand Funk Railroad Hand Me Down World - Guess Who
My age is showing, but it might be easier to play some of these. This sounds like a great project!

The S & G song really caught my eye. But I never would have thought of them without you, even though I grew up listening to that stuff too.
If you think of any more, feel free to add them. I have been bad and have not practiced this week at all. Gonna try to get a few hours in in the morning, after searching the songbooks and tab sites (if I can ever get off DU when I'm on the internets;))
