Foliage: Anyone else at peak? |
|
It's gorgeous here right now. The mtns and hills overlooking the lake are full of color. Also, we've had nice, blue skies and 70 degree days for about a week now.
:bounce:
What about you? Are you close to the "leaf peeping" season? OR- if you live elsewhere (like Arizona for example) what do you find special about your area?

There is a reason I live in the middle of no-where...I can run around and howl at the moon in my birthday suit. Or, in this case, do a rain dance for my best friend in Texas! ;-)

13. No kidding about the fog!! |
|
I've had occasion the last couple of nights to drive from Portland to Gorham and it's been unbelievably dense! So bad that you can hardly see the sides of the road in the darker areas (no streetlights)...I hate driving in fog at night!

16. Ahh yes Portland. Maine's parallel universe |
|
I'm not saying this in a derogatory way; In fact I love Portland. But it's just odd to visit such a liberal city after living among so many Conservatives. Thank God for Southern Maine! :toast:

9. Seemed to start late here this year. Just began this past weekend and |
|
probably won't hit peak until next week.
So, plenty of time to plan your drive to VERMONT!!!! I know. I know. With gas prices they way they are, we probably won't see the tourists this season.
But that just leaves more room for YOU GUYS!! So, check out those local B&B's!
And don't forget the MAPLE SYRUP! MAPLE SUGAR! MAPLE CANDIES! And moose sweatshirts, t-shirts, and baseball caps.
Gotta love VERMONT. I do! What a great place to live! OH! and after my classes on Thursday, I'm off -- the college is closed until Oct 17. Happy Leaf Peepin'!

14. Can't use too many negatives in describing Vermont; but... |
|
They've advertised themselves better then us. WE have those beautiful scenic roads too. Plus we are FIRST in the nation for maple syrup production (won in almost all taste tests too). First also in bluberry harvesting, as well as big players in rasberry, blackberry, and of course potato harvesting.
Oh and I didn't even get to our seafood....
Anyway, enjoy your trip, but please think about Maine for your next one. :-)

25. Mary... I do love Maine... I just happen to LIVE in Vermont... tee hee. |
|
We did drive to Kittery for LOBSTER this summer. YUMMMMMMMMMMY!
I can't remember the name of the place, but it's semi-famous, on a river, and a DELIGHT.
And we are planning to visit Maine soon, to look at a house in Georgetown. Hmmmm... seems remote, but I'm craving the ocean.
And ah yup....the Maine Blueberries Rock!

11. we don't have leaf peeping season here. |
|
There are Japanese maples that will turn red, and oaks for some brown, and mulberries for yellow, but there is never that SNAP with a rainbow of vivid colors. I was home last fall and saw just past peak foliage in Southern Maine and it reminded me of what I've been missing.
On the upside, everything greens up as soon as it starts to rain in late November or early December. The landscape is golden all summer.

I'm originally from Trenton, NJ but had many family members in Pennsylvania.. There was some member of the family we used to visit when I was quite young. I don't remember a whole lot about it other then the fact that we were shown a cave and my OLDER sister cried because she thought she was stuck while going through. And I was supposed to be the baby? Moi?
They closed that cave in (I think) the mid eighties because they found artifacts from the ancient native Americans. But I'll always remember the trip there. It was very pretty. (I hope I'm remembering correctly about it being in Northern Pa.) PA. and even NJ are beautiful states. Alot of people don't realize that.
Maine should have a similar website. I'm not sure if we have one at all, actually. We need some of that leaf peeper money too! :-)
