I've read all of the Patrick O'Brien novels with Jack Aubrey and Steven Maturin. Great series! I hope the movie does the book(s) justice.

1. Haven't seen it...but
I have read nothing but good reviews...some saying it is the best of the year. Even the Salon reviewer liked it which is unusual.

2. Ebert says 4 stars...
See the thread on page 2...

And this:

Snip:

"Master and Commander" is grand and glorious, and touching in its attention to its characters. Like the work of David Lean, it achieves the epic without losing sight of the human, and to see it is to be reminded of the way great action movies can rouse and exhilarate us, can affirm life instead of simply dramatizing its destruction.

3. I'm a book fan too...

I haven't seen the movie yet, but from the sound of the reviews, I've got a bad feeling about it.

Honestly, I don't know why they liscensed the O'Brian stories at all. The plot and characters are so mutilated.
