Poll question: Favorite rock n roll hired gun
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 12:01 PM by undisclosedlocation
I'm leaving four spots blank for an hour; you younger folks can fill me in on post-1990 artists and I'll add them. Don't MAKE me put Pino Palladino on this thing.

KRS-ONE makes it for being Warner Bros' go-to guest rapper back in 1991; he was on both a Too Much Joy and an REM record that year.

1. Other -- Chris Spedding
He's played with (or produced) everybody, from Roxy Music to the Sex Pistols. Not only is he a talented guitarist, but he's not a bad songwriter either. One of the great unsung heroes of the last 30+ years.

2. Considering the excitement the poll has engendered in general...
I don't think he's going to get a spate of votes, but I'll certainly put him on.

I figured I was the only one who was going to vote for him!

4. Oh, OK, I see what you mean
You mean like an ADDITION to an already existing band.

In that case, I have three:

1) Tommy Shaw for Styx (definitely the missing piece of the puzzle for that band)
2) Philip Bailey for Earth, Wind, and Fire
3) Neil Young for CS&Y

5. Not really; I pretty much meant any combination of guest artist or
addition to existing band. Defining character would probably be doing it more than once. If I'd been thinking I would have put on Steve Winwood, though I guess he was always more of a co-leader than a hired gun. Anyway, this was just for fun; no need for particularly fleshed out definitions.

6. I saw Joe Walsh twice in his James Gang days, pre-Eagles
Local boy makes good. The first time I saw him was in a little Hulabaloo nightclub in a shopping center.

Cleveland rocks, Cleveland rocks!

7. Larry Fast
Keyboard/synthesist Larry Fast get's my vote.

First, big fan of his one man "group" Synergy.

He was on most of Peter Gabriel's early electronic stuff.

He built electronic devices for bands like Yes.

He has worked with John Denver, Air Supply, Meatloaf, Foreigner, Blue Oyster Cult, Streisand, Garfunkle, Blue Oyster Cult...

And now a days he tours with the Tony Levin Band.

Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 01:01 PM by tatertop
He could be a good guitar player when he played for someone else.
I hate just about everything he recorded for himself.

Which reminds me:
"Hi, I'm Gleeeeeeeeeeeeen Campbell!'

16. I think I am wrong
He was in the band after they recorded the song.
He plays a great version, though.

Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 06:45 PM by undisclosedlocation
Or at least one of them did.

Edit: Whoops; my mistake. Apparently, nobody famous played on the record, but the entire human race were in The Champs at some time or another: http://www.sealsandcrofts.com/champs.html

Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 09:40 PM by CrownPrinceBandar
I saw him back in the late 80's with Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe and he was incredible. His use of the Chapman Stick blows me away. On one song, he had these 4-5" finger extensions and he was wailing away on his bass, it was wild.
