How do you know when you have a True Friend?
Edited on Sat Nov-15-03 02:35 AM by corarose
One way that I found out tonight is that they are there for you when someone close dies even if it was your Cat.

I love my Pet children so much more then I do people because they don't stab you in the back.

10. Didn't mean to leave you high and dry here...
...I just figured my initial response was a little coarse under the circumstances :)

17. Frankly,
I didn't realize that the thread was about pets who had, shall we say, "passed". In light of that, my original response was kinda callous.

Feel free to get me back whenever I'm least expecting it...

;)

2. me too alot of times
Edited on Sat Nov-15-03 02:36 AM by camero
my dog might have actually saved my life last night. I am a diabetic on insulin and last night while I was sleeping my sugar must have gotten way too low. When I woke up, she was licking my face and I grabbed the juice beside the bed right away because I felt like hell.

Then there are people who would do the same and those are really true friends.

Edit: No, I don't want them to lick my face, unless she's really hot...lol

4. That is so loving of your Dog
They are little people you know and they have hearts of gold.
Your dog loves you and he did save your life. I envy you for having a Dog because I miss my Dog Lulu so bad but I can't have another Dog because our bldg. only allows Cats.

I haven't had a close friend since I traveled with bands years ago. I miss them so bad.

6. It's like they just know
I have 2 actually, both females. They are like my kids. I have always wondered where they get that knack for knowing when something is wrong.

13. I saw a special report on the news just last night on dogs
that do this for their diabetic owners. Apparently, they can tell. This is truly remarkable, but it has to do with their extraordinary sense of smell. I saw where they were teaching dogs to sniff out differing forms of cancer, as well. You are so fortunate to have such an amazing dog to have figured this out on her own. I share your view of pets, as you probably know.:-)

31. Dogs also do it for epileptics
Dogs can be trained to know when a seizure is going to happen. Nobody knows how it works - it's some sort of synchronistic event. They alert the person and they can lay down on a couch or bed and wait for it to pass without falling down and getting hurt.

9. A true friend is someone...
who knows where you have been and supports where you are going, warts and all.

I have a best friend and we have been friends for 30 years, count them, 30 years. She is a recovering alcoholic and through all this we remain best of friends. She knows my pain, my anguish, my weaknesses and through it all, we have remained best friends.

Why? Honesty, not judging me, nor I, her. It is a wonderful relationship, because we are what we are and are not afraid to expose our "nakedness" to each other.

It's wonderful. I love her, through husbands, trials and tribulations, sickness etc. Not to mention, we both have the "humor"...she calls me Ethel and I call her Lucy. Need I say more?

14. Loyalty - if it holds up when tested,
you have a true friend. They are rare among humans, but pets (dogs especially, I am biased) are usually loyal to the core.

16. hard to say...I always get a feeling about it...never have to look
All my close friends have been such since I was about 3..so through time they have show their loyalty without my having reason to doubt...I never noticed though - I was too young.

But I look back fondly at the memory of watching a big bully pick on a friend, and to jump on the bully and pummel him without even thinking about consequences purley because he was messing with your friend. As well the memory of taking the heat for something you didn't even do because the alternative was giving up your friend.

Truly with a special group of 4 guys...it still is that way. I would do anything for them. I mean that. Just like they would do anything for me .....my post about "best friends" exemplifies that.

So now, I compare most "friends" to those guys. Some, but not many have made the cut. I consider myself lucky to have such good buddies.

21. A favorite saying of mine . . .
"A true friend walks in when everyone else walks out." When tragedy strikes, it's amazing how many people you thought would be there aren't. Conversely, you'll be surprised at how many people you always thought of as merely acquintances walk in.

22. I was a bit drunk last night when I posted this thread
I had one beer and it helped me to see the light. I now know the person that I thought was a Friend wasn't a Friend.

God Bless the person who invented Beer.

I wouldn't trade mine for anything. But it's important to have human friends to talk to, as well. You know that you have so many friends on DU. I remember the night that you went to the ER. Everyone was so worried and were starting threads asking about you the next day. And you posted the thread about Don_G, thanking him for getting you the new computer and a winter coat. He sounds like a real friend. I don't know who you feel turned against you, but you know that your friends on DU are here and ready to help anytime you ask.:grouphug:
