Poll question: Favorite Black Comedy
I know there are a zillion others, these are just the first ones that popped into my head. And there's always room for yours under the ubiquitous "other". ;)

20. Yeah, the title of this thread had me wondering...
"Black" comedy or "African-American" comedy?

I guess most people don't think about it.

:yourock:

Did you know that the LaserDisc edition of the movie is in widescreen while the DVD edition is pan'n'scan?

I want to find and buy the LD edition so I can convert it into a DVD, widescreen'n'all.

5. Other: Grace Quigley

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/GraceQuigley-1008674/about.php

After spotting hitman Seymour Flint in action, senior citizen Grace Quigley gets the idea for an offbeat scheme that could garner the two of them loads of money. Her plan: kill elderly people who have become tired of living. Although Seymour at first refuses to take part in such a business, once the two forge an offbeat mother-and-son relationship, he gives in. The men and women who hire Seymour are happy to pay him and Grace for the service, but complications develop and the murderer starts questioning what he is doing...

This is the weirdest, blackest comedy I've ever seen. It's a little-known film but Hepburn and Nolte form a twisted relationship centered on this 'suicide-by-proxy' scheme and both are terrific in their roles. There are some surreal murder scenes where you're not sure whether to be horrified or to dissolve in laughter. The real surprise is that this gem came from Golan-Globus, usually known for B- or C+ movies.

21. I loved the movie "Happiness" It was very funny, in a sick way.
but I don't know anyone else who's seen it. I remember there was a sign in the theater that you couldn't leave the movie and ask for your money back. It was an unrated movie, and if it was going to bother you, don't go see it.

10. Dr. Strangelove by a mile.
You can't fight in here, this is the war room!

By the by.. why is Clockwork Orange up there?

I didn't realize it qualified as a black comedy in any way shape or form.. true it has some funny bits to it, however I always thought it was well within the bounds of a drama...

11. Yeah, I was unsure
about that one being technically definined as a black comedy. I think it's very funny in a sick twisted way, so maybe it's just me.

43. I re-watched that last night. Second the vote!
I remember seeing this film when it was originally released, a few people walked out of the movie theater and demanded their money back at the box office. These same people shot me dirty looks whenever I laughed out loud at certain scenes.

Funny and painful movie. (kinda like 'Happiness')

Although I love the first three movies, and they're all probably better than Heathers -- HEATHERS is the ultimate black comedy.

Tough pick...I went with Kubrick though. He had such a subtle, but biting sense of humor. Dr. Strangelove, that is. Didn't really think Clockwork Orange was "comedy." Definitely black, though.

19. Well, "Heathers" was the first one that popped into my mind when

I saw the thread title, but perhaps that's only because I watched it again a week or two ago.

How about "Life Is Beautiful"? Or another one by and with Roberto Benigno and his wife, "Johnny Stecchino" ("Johnny Toothpick" in English.)

I can't recall the name but there's one with Anthony Hopkins as a judge who's plotting the perfect way to kill his wife (Blythe Danner) -- anyone else seen that?
