Chicago DU'ers are there any good bars |
|
I am broke and I am thinking about using my thanksgiving dinner money to get drunk with.
Any suggestions on good bars in the Rush Street area or any area in Chicago.

It doesn't sound like a very good idea?

XNASA arranged a little meetup last year when I was visiting. We met at The Charleston on N. Hoyne. I still have my matchbook.
I hope you'll think twice though. :-)

26. Oh and that was the *only * good place you went to? |
|
What about that great little Irish pub I dragged you all to? Free music and a FIREPLACE! We even had our second Chicago DU gathering there. Such a cute place!

Loved the fireplace!
What was the name of the place we went after The Charleston. That place was cool, too.

But that sounds like a depressing way to spend your Thanksgiving money. Not that I'm above getting drunk on occasion, I just think you should save it for the holiday. Don't you have anybody to have dinner with on Thanksgiving?
Also, if you decide to drink, drinking at home is a lot cheaper than the bar. You could get more bang for your buck, unless you are also wanting the social aspect of drinking in a bar.

I am sorry about your grants and loans, but getting ripped on Thanksgiving isn't going to make life better.

Between your cat's passing yesterday and the problem with your scholarship, a few beers might help one evening.
Just remember my offer to help with your tuition until you get your scholarship back.

29. It's sounds more like you need to get your mind on things |
|
things that are important.
Drinking is not going to help get your funding back and it isn't going to help your pain problems. But go ahead, maybe you haven't fallen quite far enough yet.

I was broke one Thanksgiving and my roommate bought me "Thanksgiving dinner" at the ribs joint down the street on Halsted. I'd never had a slab before - we made a mess and had a ball.
There's also a great bar (which, of course, I can't remember the name of) further down on Halsted (I think) that has meatloaf and "lumpy spuds" as their specialty on the menu. Great old wood bar with giant mirror, great booze selection, and booths.
Chicago's a world-class bar town...don't let anyone tell you how you "should" spend your day off.

Thanks I actually don't need to eat the stapling helps me with that part of my life plus I know how to make bread and that fills you up.
I am going to make some bread and take it to the shelters.

It's Charlie's Ale House. The one I was referring to is in Lincoln Park, but I think there's one at Navy Pier now, too.

It's the original, so it's not "touristy", trust me. Would probably be packed to the walls on a holiday, though.

she is on pain meds and just lost her college funding because she let her grades go to shit. The last thing she needs is encouragement to drink.

I need to have a few beers. Most of the times it falls right before Thanksgiving so people are either on their way out of town or they have family over.

That will not help, believe me, though this post is probably too late. I know that you are hurting, with the loss of your cat and your scholarship problems. Just stay on DU and let your friends help you. They really came through for you when you had your dental emergency, please stay in touch and let us do it again.:-)

31. If you're looking for insanity... |
|
... I say Mothers in the Rush Street area (parts of "About Last Night" were filmed there.
A little more insanity? Try "Dick's Last Resort" near the pier. Very strange, rowdy place.
Don't know of the individual mellow hole-in -the-walls. But I have gone to Chicago on business quite a few times, and these were the kinds of places we went.
