Calling DU Tattooed Ladies... show us your ink!
Idea stemming from this sub-thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=4134543&mesg_id=4140537

Just curious, how many DU women have tattoos? Based on that thread, and a couple others, I know of a few:

Fleabert (dragonfly on back - see my icon :) )
sjbech (right arm sleeve ...plus?)
Shell Beau (a rumored daisy)
Xmas74 (undisclosed)
RubyDuby in GA (3 undisclosed)

I don't recall ever seeing a roll call before here, but I'd wager there are many others out there... check in, and post a picture or two if you dare to share!

And if someone wants to start a thread of tattooed men for equal time, be my guest. :)

It's a lot harder to chicken out if someone else is pushing you, or you have someone else to drag along with you. :)

What should we get? I've been toying with the idea of the Uffington Horse:

From the cover of the XTC album "Engish Settlement" -- it's an ancient symbol. I don't know, it just looks cool to me. :)

I didn't like the idea of the permanence, but lately I'm realizing that it's not like renting an apartment... you don't get your deposit back if you turn in your body without any marks on it, or a Star Wars figure that's worth more on eBay because it's still in the shrink wrap. :)

The sun is just about that size. It's right at the top of my hip just about where it meets my back.

The moon is actually a moon and shooting star...the star is in the middle of my back right at the bottom of my neck with a trail of stardust working it's way back toward the moon. It's kinda hard to tell all that from the little pic. That star really fuckin' hurt too. Not a lot of meat under the skin in that spot and it was a serious owie.

Piano wire or guitar string and India ink to make a "dot" representing every weekend long kegger you've snuck out to. They've faded so much that they look like a dark faded freckle from a distance now.
You wouldn't know what they were unless I actually told you. And I got them done on my upper thigh or my foot(not as noticable).

You must have had a helluva tattoo in mind! :)

Probably the easiest way to post a picture is:
1 - go to http://www.tinypic.com
2 - click the button that says "Choose File" right in the middle
3 - navigate to the picture on your computer that you want to upload and select it
4 - click the "Host Picture" button a little further down
5 - It should come back with a page that says "successfully hosted!" with a thumbnail of the image and four fields. Just copy the text in the field labeled LINK
6 - Paste the LINK text into your message!

Actually it was hell going through the radiation.

As long term effects I have a lot of scar tissue in my lungs and will need to have two of my heart valves replaced sooner or later, but given the circumstances, I can handle that, if it means I am alive.

74. I have six.
and I have pictures, but the link is down (deliberately) until after November's election.

I have a hummingbird and morning glory vine on my upper back (that's actually three tattoos), I have a very detailed tiger swallowtail butterfly on my lower back, I have a rosebud on the lefthand side of my cleavage, and I have a Celtic band around my left wrist (my husband has a matching one on his left wrist - neither of us regularly wears a wedding ring, so this replaces it).

I intend to get the entire back piece made into a single full back. The bird, flower, and butterfly are all native Northwest species, and will be joined by a Pacific treefrog, a dragonfly, and the rest of the vine trailing from the back of my right shoulder and twining around all the way to the left hip. They all have great personal significance to me, and I am very proud of them. I got the first one when I was just shy of 40 years old, so it's not like they were some teenage fad. These are pieces of bodyart I wanted for more than 20 years.

but no pic of it. It is a lizard encircling my belly button.

That tattoo took 7 months - first month was the outline, and the next six months were the color and detail and shading.

I sat down with my tat guy and gave him an idea of what I wanted, and the colors I liked, and he ran with it.

114. I like to keep a few things to myself!
tat-two will remain privledged info for a bit longer... (actually, it was tat-one, the dragonfly was tat-two, but you get my drift)

as for the next four:
on the top of my left foot-- perhaps a tribal design or the symbol for peace that I saw earlier in this thread, that was really pretty.

on the back of my neck--a free form drawing/outline/sculptural looking piece of a woman holding an infant in profile...I saw it as a piece of jewelry, and haven't had it drawn yet, but it will be to commemorate having a child- once I have one.

an additon to the dragonfly--I'd like to have my grandmother's name or a quote, or dates for her added

and an upper arm sleeve--no clue yet, this is a new idea, but I am currently in LOVE with sleeves!

and maybe even something on my upper back, to disguise a scar I have from having a mole removed

115. It's OK to admit it...
...that first tat says "Gmoney 4evah" doesn't it? Right over your heart? I had a feeling...

Those other ideas sound pretty ambitious... maybe you can merge them all into the sleeve design, sort of a "circle of life" thing with the mother/child grandmother theme.

This thread has really opened my eyes as to how much thought and planning some people put into their tattoos.

My first thought of tattoos used to be informed by my grumpy old boss who always wore long sleeve shirts... one day, the AC was out or something, and he rolled up his sleeves to reveal an old, green-faded tattoo of an adorable little skunk with the name "Stinky" in a banner underneath it. It was all I could do to not  -- so that played into my thinking that a tattoo is something you'll sooner or later regret. But all the thoughtful designs and meaningful symbols in this thread are really sweet and prompting me to reconsider that notion.

This thread does seem to be losing steam, so again, thanks to all who responded and shared! :grouphug:
