Clapton is the bottom line here.
edit: but, where do you pick it up along the way? Eddie, Jerry, Zappa, Page, and... Steve Gaines.
A long row...

6. I say this with the deepest reverence and respect .... |
|
Clapton last had a real influence on the rock music scene with Layla, after which his guitar-god status waned, if only because he failed to MOVE that scene any longer ...
White Room, Sunshine OYL, Tales of Brave Ulysses, SCHWALBR(?), and Crossroads seem so long ago now ... He is of little impact since then, IMLTHO ...
Even if one used the same arguments against him: Page STILL rules the roost ....
NOT because he himself has an impact on the rock scene, but because his greateness as the exemplar of the rock guitar idiom is STILL recognized by up-and-coming players ....
Mention Clapton to a 20-something guitarist and you'll receive a few disinterested blinks ...
Mention Jimmy Page to that same crowd .... and the tones of reverence will freely flow out .... he is still having an impact on the fresh minds of new guitarists ....
I have had to dust off my LZ cds ..... and hand them over to my guitar-playing daughter so she could bring them to her guitar-playing friends: so they could communicate, as it were, with the Page-Muse ...
Not ONCE have they begged for Disraeli Gears ...

When all your influences are boiled down, who do you favor in your style? Or your daughter's style? You can do a helluvalot worse than Jimmy Page.

32. LOL I can second you on Preston... |
|
I produce a show annually of some of the best acoustic players. Preston has been on the bill several times as has Laurence Juber (former lead guitar player from Wings) and Nokie Edwards (lead guit of the Ventures)
WHile I am at it I HAVE to give kudos to Nokie since surf music made me want to pick up a guitar in the first place. WALK DON'T RUN was one of the first riffs I learned at the age of 8(played it rather poorly then, I do it some justice now). It is really weird to now be able to call up the guy that I regarded as an idol and shoot the shit with him and his wife.

Albert Collins Lightnin' Hopkins Robert Cray Johnny Copeland Bo Diddley
More recently...
Jack White (of the White Stripes - you gotta hear their version of Death Letter)
Kenny Wayne Shepherd
So many more...
By the way: Congratulations on Ms. Blanco's victory yesterday!

Used to memorize Frank's stuff in my youth. Hot Rats and Chunga's Revenge particularly. Holdsworth--well, one can only aspire.
For songwriting, though, much more Captain Beefheart via Frank Black than anything. "Walk the sand, with the crustaceons...."

19. Hendrix, Morello, Page |
|
yea im all over the map here...
Jimi: speaks for himself, from his unassailalbe(sp?) seat at number one on all the 'greatest' lists
Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, The Nightwatchman): probably the only one i have to explain, but he is (in my opnion) THE most innovative metal guitarist. i havent heard his new acoustic solo project (Then Nightwatchman) but its bound to be good. also its hard to even come close to his level technical skill. that and the whole turntable scratching sound like thing he does on his ibanez is something ive never heard somone do so well or controlled. that, and the man has style, dammit.
Jimmy Page: do you really need an explination?

38. Believe it or not, drummers. |
|
My playing style is heavily, although not inordinately, rythmic-based, and I utilize time more than pitch to create melodic structures.
That, and the independence of motion that drummers must have in their limbs is quite applicable to the fingers.

His independence of fingers is such that he can chord on the lower strings and solo on the top strings at the same time.
Plus his hammer-on technique allows him to sound like a clarinet, or a bagpipe.
Other players I have found inspiring include Zappa, Jorma Kaukonen, Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser, Steve Hackett, Fred Frith, Tom Verlaine, Henry Kaiser-- a pretty mixed bag, I like to think.

a much different question than simply "who do you like?"
I'd love to play like Richard Thompson or Tom Verlaine, but I can't. Oh well.
Guitarists who have influenced my style include John Fahey, Joey Santiago (not the most technically proficient, but neither am I, and he plays with passion), Jim Shepard, Chrissy Hynde (yes, as a guitarist), Bruce Gilbert, Mick Collins, and others.
