Poll question: Science Fictionish Poll
Edited on Sun Nov-16-03 11:53 AM by Magic Rat
Will human beings ever colonize space?

Yes - eventually we'll destroy the planet and have to move elsewhere.

NO - if we destroy the planet, it'll probably be just Americans colonizing space and other countries probably would destroy us before we could colonize space.

The Dinosaurs were happy for- what, 200 million years?- before they got cashiered by ONE small space body impacting on the Earth- do the math.

Only a fool keeps his eggs all in one basket.

2. We're destroying the planet right now and there's no hope of finding ...
another.

Planets are too far apart for one thing...

Given how the corporate world loves to exploit and callously damage in the pursuit of personal profit, I'd rather see them die than find new resources to exploit for money. That's no typo. Unfortunately, the good people of this Earth would be dying alongside them, and no amount of money would be helpful by then to save this environment which is, indeed, a rare jewel of the universe.

We need to stop the corporate world now. It's as simple as that. Enough of this greed shit. Money is evil and is the root of all evil and if it hasn't been proven by now, then let the Earth wipe us all out and let birds become the next dominant species...

4. I don't think it's possible for humans to destroy the planet
It's a big, big hunk o' dirt. I think if we tried we could succeed in killing off a lot of surface life, but not all of it, and certainly not all the ocean life.

The cockroaches always endure!

6. We only need to destroy ourselves, not the planet, to close off
the possibility. Chances of us destroying ourselves before we can colonize another planet--well, Chimpy has 51% approval. I'm a tad pessimistic.

3. Not as such
The concepts of "human" and "colonization" will become meaningless in the future, so the question will become moot.

5. No
The distances are too great. Unless we can figure out a way to travel near the speed of light, we couldn't even move large numbers of people to Mars. Even if we could move at the speed of light, we still couldn't get much past the limits of our solar system.

11. Wrong
We have the techonolgy now to massively colonize Mars. We could have done it 10 years ago. The only thing stopping us is the whole cost prohibitive factor. Well, and the fact that there is no cable on Mars. Of course, I also think an 18 month cruise to get to Mars would be kind of spiffy and not an impediment.

Money limits us.

7. Possibly
Every question has not been answered scientifically answered yet. Who knows what technological abilities lay in front of us? If we do not destroy our species any time soon, say within the next thoussnd years, humans will probably colonize space. If we are still here for a million years and have not reverted back (which is also a possibility if there is some kind of diaster casued by technology), humans will colonize space other solar systems. I think even in the next hundred years, we may send people to live on the moon if the earth continues to become more crowded.

8. I believe China will.
Since America is paralyzed by religious Lysenkoism, I expect the Chinese to build a moon base and get to Mars.

Meanwhile, America will be a third world nation obsessed with studying a book of fairy tales.
