Poll question: Has DU Ever Helped Change Your Mind On An Issue? |
|
Did you come to DU feeling a certain way about an issue or a person and after reading and finding out more information here, changed your mind?
Have you evolved, at all, politically, since arriving at DU?
Or are you set in your ways and nothing much is gonna change how you feel about anything you came here with?

1. I chose the 2nd option |
|
It is not so much that I have changed my mind on anything, however I have clarified some of my feelings and thoughts. For instance, I find that I now give myself permission to be as radically feminist as I want, since in general I will never get that permission from male dominated society. It amazes me how many men are democrats and don't get the women's issue thing.

5. I've changed my mind on a couple issues |
|
I know i've gone from being neutral on the gun issue to being pro-gun control, and I also now believe in the socialization of stuff like mass transit and other public utilities. I'm probably missing a few other things, but that's all that comes to mind

6. Yeah -- I was persuaded to support Dean |
|
I have issues with him.
But nothing TOO serious.
I was persuaded that Gore would NOT come back and that Dean was THE Candidate for ME.

7. Yes. Unions & Globalization |
|
I've never given them much thought since Reagan busted the air traffic controllers. Aside from that, my opinion of them has sometimes been a little negative. It wasn't just one person or one thread that did it. But I started listening and reading things and ultimately Greg Palast's book put it all together for me. Now I think unions are the last best hope for America and for the world. God bless 'em.

No one has actually 'changed' my mind on any of the issues I hold dear. But this has little to do with the judgement that I'm inflexible. The only issues anyone on these boards has tried to change are those I hold with regard to religion. Faith and non-belief are not really a negotiation. You can't really talk someone into or out of their faith unless they were already leaning in those directions.
What has changed since visiting these boards are in some cases the priority that I assess some issues to hold. Some issues I hadn't thought terribly important I've begun to think otherwise.
For the most part my perspectives on issues is excruciatingly well thought out, and there always seems to be at least a small cluster of folks who agree with my views.

;) Seriously, it has helped me determine what's important to me as a voter and a citizen.
I didn't know who the candidates were before I started lurking here (back in July). I probably would have been more open-minded toward Dean if I hadn't come here first. I'm going to try to regain a little more of that open-mindedness.
