Took a job with a nonprofit that fell through. Then I got mugged at gun point. Then I went away for a weekend and had all my belongings stolen. At that point I decided to leave.

I hated Florida the first time I was there in 1981. I made several visits after that and got to like it okay, but it took a while.

Ah, when I was young...

Me, my car, enough food for a week or two, some good music, and just enough money to buy gasoline to get where I was going, and a canvas bag of videogame tokens to buy newspapers and wash my clothes at any laundromat.

Heh... I can still imagine those newspaper and laundromat managers cussing, "WTF bastard spawn from hell made these video game tokens the same size as quarters!"

Ummm, that would have been the boss who fired me, just before he went to jail.

Yes, sleeping at highway rest stops seemed difficult at first, well, compared to what crawling home to my family might have been. But that was before my car broke down and I graduated to sleeping at bus stations.

I was pissed off at the world, at Ronald Reagan, at the United States, and everything else while I was making those memories. I was an "angry young man" in every way.

But it all turned out all right, and I'm smiling as I write this. I don't know why, except maybe because it's long past, and these days I've got a wife and kids and a mortgage.

Who'd have thunk?
