My first name is the 22nd most popular name for women, my last name is very rare. Even when living in big cities, I've never seen anyone in the phone book with my last name (except a close relative).

17. A question about Hispanic surnames
There are a handful in the top 20, which seems a little odd considering Hispanics are only about 13% of the total population. This would indicate that there is less variety in surnames among the Hispanic population. Does anyone know if that is true and, if so, why?

27. not sure, but...
most latinos in the US historically have been working-class Mexicans (at least in terms of numbers.) Mexico was settled by relatively few Spanish families, who then forced native Mexicans and mestizos to take their own last names. Thus there are a few last names, like Hernandez, Lopez, Fernandez, etc that are very common.

34. It sounds like this is similar to the "slave names" of African-Americans
I hadn't even considered that a lot of Latinos are of Native-American ancestry, though I guess the term "mestizo" (which I had to look up :dunce:)is more appropriate. This may have some political significance considering that the commonality of many African-American names was a factor in some of the voter rolls purging that occurred in Florida. Just one of the ways that old oppression can be used for new oppression.
Thanks for the insight, smallprint.

41. Fairly Common First Name; Fairly Rare Last Name
My first name is 37th in the country amongst men.

However, my last name was 24,885th. There are only about 1200 people in the country with my last name. I do know that there are only about 20 in this state, and my wife, me, and my mom are 3 of them. So, i guess this makes sense.
The Professor
