5. hard to look at that
Part of me loves the look of that art style... but then I think of all the evil and death he caused and his bizarre sexual appetite. :scared:

7. He also did not bathe or brush his teeth
and he refused to use toilets. He shit in his garden.

to wash, which wasn't often, Mao preffered to have himself rubbed with hot towels.

He must have smelled terrible.

Mao is responsible for more deaths than any other leader. Deaths attributed to results of his policies are more than any man caused event except the Second World War! :wow:

8. yeah
I had a buddy I used to work with who used to rant about how bizarre it was for folks to walk around with Mao t-shirts, knowing full well how much suffering and death his policies caused. But unlike Stalin, etc. Mao tends to still be seen by some as this cuddly, iconic figure.

Didn't mean to be so serious about this, but what the hey! ;)

13. I'm reading a very unflattering biography of him right now
I just picked it up to read on the plane. It's by Jung Chang, author of "Wild Swans," her memoir of growing up during the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.

We really don't hear Mao being mentioned up there with Stalin or Hitler nearly enough.

14. I read Wild Swans for a college class on modern China
really good book. I very much enjoyed it.

I read a huge biography of Mao (I cannot remember the author) that I got from the library, and it was that author who blamed Mao for more deaths than any other man. A huge part was his disastrous "Great leap" project, which created what was perhaps the worst famine in recorded history.

15. I knew a guy in law school who idolized Mao and Pol Pot
He thought that culling the population was a good way to instill revolutionary purity. He was not kidding.

16. woah
:wow:

now that is a hardcore communist for you. Kind of scary. There is a Maoist Party in the US. I can't remember what it's name is but I think it is like "the People's revolutionary Party". I saw their website once and they were endorsing a Maoist revolution, apparently forgetting that Mao's strategy was based on a backward peasant agarian nation with a very ineffective government and still fractured from an extremely bloody war with japan rather than an advanced post-industrial superpower :eyes:
