1. Australia...

"Waltzing Mathilda", upbeat tune and not so full of sickening nationalism or warmongering either but shows national pride without being so formal or relying on tearjerker emotions.

4. The International

For me, by far the best anthem was, is, and always will be "The Internationale". I have been privilaged enough to stand on Red Square and join in a rousing Russian version of this song. Billy Bragg recently recorded and updated version of this anthem, and it wasn't so bad... In fact it was quite good, come to think of it.

For me the worst is "God Save the Queen" (and I don't mean the Sex Pistols version, which is brilliant). I hate it. Absolute bloody drivel. The sooner the monarchy goes the better!

3. Waltzing Matilda is not the Australian National Anthem

Its mostly sung at footy and rugby games.

9. Isn't that the "unofficial" National Anthem?

As in, by law we don't really have one but everyone considers Waltzing Matilda to be the anthem so it is?

the recording of the German anthem is terrible. Strange to hear it sung (it seldomly is). I prefer these recordings without vocals:

12. Weird...Russia still using old Soviet "evil empire" anthem...

I used to think it was a pretty nice piece of music, until it was ruined for me by hearing it played after the U.S.S.R.'s "victory" in the 1972 Olympic basketball finals -- the game that was to basketball what Florida 2000 was to fair elections...
