Poll question: Most annoyingly smug fans in sports
Edited on Sun Oct-23-05 07:49 PM by eyepaddle
Yeah, we can all lustily despise the New York Yankees, absolutely LOATHE the Dallas Cowboys, but which team's fans have the smuggest attitude along the lines of "yeah, I know you cheer for your team--but that's only because my team isn't around. I know when you get the chance to root for my team in person I know you will. I mean, I just don't see how it's even POSSIBLE that somebody might not root for my team."

1. Coming from a family of die hard Lions fans,
we don't hear much of that Green Bay crap. I don't think they dare.

2. Lucky you, you guys have a lake separating you and
your stadium's on the far side of the state. If the Vikings played in Moorhead there'd be a lot less cheese in the stands. Or if the Packers played in Hudson there'd be a LOT more purple there.

Tonight some Packer fan accused my friends' wife and sister of being on "the" boat. (basically called them whores). That was great.

12. In Minesota if you told 'em you were a Lions fan
they'd pretty much know you were lying! ;)

Lions fans are just not that common around here, I guessing because Michigan is a LOONNNGGGGG drive from MN. About the only Lions fan I know of is the noon till two host of the local sports-talk radio station! (He's Dan "The Common Man" Cole, aka "Common") I haven't listened to KFAN since we got Air America, but Common was one f my favorites. Pretty progressive and very low key.

Early money is on Lions to take the North Skol! :toast:

20. Despit their annoying habit of completely
humiliating the Purple about every four years, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the Lions. They just seem snakebit, for no good reason (other than perpetual want of a qurterback).
Maybe this year is their year? The roar has been restored! :D

41. So many people with a soft spot for a once great team.
Sad, but kind of heartening in a way. Sometimes I wonder if people's "soft spot" for the Lions is actually a soft spot for Detroit, and well wishes for it to become great again. Maybe not, but one can hope.

just ask 49er fans. It'll take some time and $ by ownership, but the Lions will be a force to be reconed with in a couple of years.

58. It was supposed to be THIS year...............
How long are the putting it off now....another couple years.

Forget it. The Roar will NEVER be restored. It's a team of talented, yet injury-prone individuals. It's not a team.

I feel BAD for Joey Harrington having had to play for that team. They've been calling of his replacement before he ever stepped foot on the field.

Sure Packer fans are a drunken annoyance, but Raider fans are both more fanatic in thier devotion and far more inebriated. Not a good combo.

Denver fans are the most arrogant, as their beloved coach encourages hits that really should be prohibited.

This is just this Charger fan's humble opinion; I have season tickets. I have sat with them all; Denver's are the most annoyingly smug.

8. I don't understand why you are so surprised to have fans of opposing team
in 'your' stadium. It happens everywhere that the home team can't fill a stadium and a team with a strong base comes to play. Everywhere across every sport.

Maybe if the Vikes were good enough to fill the stadium with their own fans it would not be as much of an issue. Seriously. I used the Lambeau/Wrigley field examples in other thread. Focus on some wins and you may edge out those 'obnoxious' fans.

13. That's not true
We get drunken Packer fans in the seats near us at the 'Stick and there hasn't been an available ticket there in my lifetime. The damned cheeseheads buy 'em from scalpers, people who can't go that day (who hear about it later if thier guests make asses of themselves,) etc. It has nothing to do with fan base or lack thereof.

14. The Vikings have sold out 79 home games in a row.
Wrigley field is more of a picnic with a baseball game atttached, the only baseball stadiums with the kind of crazed intensity to match football are probably Boston and Philadelphia. If I went to a Chicago Blackhawks game and started jacking my jaw, I don't think I'd have the right to act surprised when it's not well recieved.

There are a lot of Packer fans who live a hell of a lot closer to the Twin Cities than Green Bay--they seem to be willing to blow astronomical sums of money on scalped tickets. There are many Vikings fans who largely pay for their season tickets by selling one game's ticket to a Packer fan. I wish it weren't the case, but money still talks.

For the record though, tickets at Lambeau ARE available--you just have to be willing to contact a broker and cough up some cash.

Vikings fans would be able to fill the stands without the Yakker fans buying up all the tickets.

The Vikings have sold out every game since like 1998.

24. It's a GAME, dammit!
It seems there are only 2 kinds of fans at too many sporting events:

1- The fanatic who threatens anyone who even THINKS about cheering for the visiting team.

2- The fanatic who goes to away games, screams insults at the home team and it's fans, and basically invites said fans to kill him.

And then there's me. I cheer for the team I like, applaud good plays by either side, and leave after spending a fine afternoon or evening watching pros perform acts of strength and co-ordination I could only dream of doing myself. Yes, it's root, root root for the home team, if they don't win it's a shame (such a shame).. but I'm not gonna go berserk over it. Maybe that's why I've always liked Wrigley Field, and far from hating the White Sox, I hope they win the World Series, but I'll applaud the Astros if they come out on top.
So there!:7

I'm in Minnesota and Patriots fans are as rare as Hen's teeth, so are they smugly annoying, or abrasive? It's the smugly annoying I'm concerned with!

But don't worry about GB - they aren't much good this year so you can brag ;)

Patsies fans are the kind who act like no other team matters except for the Pats. They act like no other fans have the right to even be semi-proud of their teams because...(didn't you know?) the Patriots are the best team ever and the only team anyone REALLY cares about :eyes:

I really don't like ANY fan base that refuses to live in the present. Yankee Fans and Green Bay fans are the same that way. It's always.......well how many championships has YOUR team won? They gloss over the fact that their team is currently the 3rd or 4th worst team in the league.
