Hey, this is Maggie- I got back from DC yesterday, it was amazing... I don't feel like writing much at the moment, but wanted to post some pictures of my trip (i took over 200... so I just chose a few)
It was a really awesome trip, I would love to go again. The highlight of the program was my group's amendment (which i wrote) getting passed in a congress of 400 kids!
The entire week I role played a moderate Republican. The general idea of our admendment was to grant extended powers to the president and judges in time of war. I guess you could say it was a hard role to play, considering I disagreed with all that we were working for. It was a unique experience to play a republican, mostly because a lot of the kids were liberal who attended the conference.
One one of the days, we got to walk around Capitol Hill- I visited the Senate Gallery and saw Trent Lott, but unfortunately had to leave just before Hillary Clinton came onto the floor. :( After that, I visited the Library of Congress, The Supreme Court, The House office buildings and Senate Office Buildings, and more. I waited around Chuck Schumer's office (we almost got to meet him, but because of the filibuster he was running late, so we met with staff)
Later, we got to go to the Jefferson Memorial. It was a really windy day, and it was funny because I almost got knocked over!
Of course we visited all the important memorials, Arlington Cemetery, etc. My favorite was seeing the RFK gravesite. It was a sad experience but I walked away from it feeling very moved.
One of the days we got to eat breakfast with the press, and ask them questions. During this time, president bush's attorney visited and avoided every question we asked of him :)
Perhaps one of the coolest things was the FDR memorial. I found it amusing that FDR wanted his memorial to be the size of his desk, but the US government built a four room, 8 acre memorial to him :eyes:
And everywhere we went you could see the Washington Monument, so I have about 15 pictures of it =)
There is the obligatory Whitehouse photo op:
And one day we walked around and saw all the museums. My favorite was the East Building of the art museum...
That's it for now, maybe later I'll post more pictures. Thanks again to all of you who made this trip possible.
:loveya:

on edit: and of course, can't forget meeting that loveable redheaded sugarmuffin youngred. Although our pictures came out horrible, so we're not posting those haha :D
by the way, the only reason i included that edit was because Zack complained to me.
