GAWD I Forgot How INSANE Working For Others Can Be!
Edited on Mon Nov-17-03 05:37 PM by matcom
owned my own business for years but economy....well you know.

now i am a webmaster at a mortgage company in charge of an Intranet, Marketing campaigns and currently 15 web sites.

anyhoo......

boss walks up at 1:00 pm this afternoon and says that he wants a contact form put up on the Intranet with questions that the reps need to ask customers who call in on the 800 number. needs to be accessed by all brokers etc...etc...

no prob.

then he says that he wants the form to get emailed to all managers AND populate a database (that is not yet created) when the broker submits it. then a built in way to run reports on the database where managers can filter the data by each broker.

ok. i am a good enough ASP programmer to handle this.

Me: "shouldn't be too difficult. do you want this to take precedent over the other projects i am currently working on?"

Him: "it shouldn't have to. you can have this up and running by the end of the day can't you?"

Me: "um......... :wtf: ? no, but i should have it done by the end of the week"

Him: "its just a simple spread sheet isn't it?"

Me: *shakes head yet again* "i'll get it up and functional asap"

My Supervisor: *ROTFPIHP WHEN THE BOSS LEFT*

:argh:

1. wow, we have a pretty good programmer and he
would be able to do that for us in about 3, maybe 4 weeks. That sucks, indeed.

2. Stop posting and get coding you slacker!
For added penance you have to use an Access DB in stead of SQL Server.

7. Access! Aaaaargh
I'm not a programmer, but I had enough savvy to set up a small database in Paradox. It did everything (simple) that I needed it to do. It was a breeze.

So, they gave me a new computer for Y2K and told me I had to use Access. But there was no training and no support. They hired a consultant to convert our databases and let her go when it was done. She set it up with bells and whistles I can't begin to understand. I practically have to hop on my left foot and type with my left hand only to get anything out of it.

Still, no training and no support. The reason for the change? Access came free on the computer, and Paradox would have cost them a few bucks!

4. If it's "just a simple spreadsheet"
maybe he can just have his assistant do it.

5. tell them the internet is inherently insecure and
that your users need to download and print out a blank template spreadsheet, print it, populate the cells with data by hand and fax it in.

8. If you're stuck with Access
Then by all means, use FrontPage. You could indeed build this in a couple of hours with FrontPage.

9. no way in HELL!
its Dreamweaver 100% for me.

FRONTPAGE SUCKS!

do you realize what extraineous code FP generates?

FrontPage is the DEVIL to web developers.

in order to write the form to both email AND Access, i'll have to use ASP and CDONTS technology.

i :puke: on FrontPage

10. Right-O
Just hope your boss doesn't have somebody familiar with FrontPage around to talk to. If he asked me, I'd tell him I'd use the point and click tools of FrontPage to create the form, have it write to the database and send the e-mails, and create an interace to queery the databse all withought manually writing a single line of code, and I'd be done in an afternoon. And you'd tell himm, but, but, all that extranious code. And he'd say, who gives a fuck about a couple line of extra code.
