What should my literary magazine essay be about |
|
Edited on Mon Nov-17-03 09:26 PM by JohnKleeb
 My plan now is to write about the rise of my personal political awareness and how it conicides with the evils committed by Bush and the selection and such. Suggestions. I really wanna write a good essay and make a good impression, I wanna write for a living now when I am older so why not get some practice. PS: This is for a school literary magazine. Thanks guys, I am open to suggestions.

1. You could show how a lack of political awareness |
|
affects elections in this country by writing about how few of the people actually vote in elections compared to the population of people who are of voting age. Might be a good place to start or a good point to work into your essay somewhere.
On second thought that might not be too good for a literary magazine, but maybe you could use the theme of voter apathy somewhere in there.

3. As a fellow writer, John, I would say ... |
|
Focus. Focus on the 2000 election fiasco in Florida, focus on BBV, focus on the lies leading into the war, or focus on the Plame outing. Pick a topic and research it until you want to puke. Then cool it a day or so, and jump back into the research. At some point, only you will know depending upon your speed, push eveything away and write the damn paper.

4. How about the novel "1984" |
|
And how it seems to a guiding light behind the Bush administration. I'm talking about the manipulation of language, Orwellian newspeak. Such as the "Clean Skies" (or whatever they call it) being an "initiative" that will actually increase air pollution. The "Healthy Forests" thing which will allow lumber companies to go on clear-cutting rampages. And of course the whole "war is peace" thing. There are a bunch of them; the White House website will be your friend.

5. if I were you...and I was a writer..... |
|
Who did write for the school literary magazine as well as the school newspaper...
Write about the moment you became fascinated by politics. Whether it was the 2000 election, or after 911 or whenever it was that you said "What the fuck is going on in this country?"
Find that moment, and you have half your story written.

6. Be careful about too wide a topic. |
|
If you are going to pick something broad in scope, make sure you can develop your idea and get the point across in the space allowed, otherwise i would suggest narrowing your focus. An essay that tries to cover too much groud will be weak if it is forced into a less than ideal space.
