I'm addicted to diet coke |
|
and/or diet pepsi in the morning.
I would rather have that than coffee or crack cocaine.
What is it about these drinks?

Plenty of similarities between Rumsfield and Strangelove.

I can quit any time I want to. I just don't want to :P
Actually, that's kind of true. We've been really broke recently and haven't been able to afford the luxuries that we normally could (like diet coke). No headaches and no withdrawals. Compared to coffee, diet coke's quite light on caffeine.

10. The science on the aspartame ? is all fubar-ed..... |
|
It's all anecdotal and coincidental (and when a system gets complex enough, coincidence HAS to happen) and has been mostly disproven. Monsanto doesn't need or deserve our money, true, but the only other non-caloric sweetened soda on the market is Tab and as much as I like it, it's hard to find, and most other people despise it. Saccharin is safe enough, and the carcinogen warning is under re-evaluation, and it's not under patent, but it does have that aftertaste problem.
The reason that people get headaches after consuming aspartame is actually pretty simple. Aspartame mimics sugar and causes a release of insulin into the body, just like a sugar dose would.... but no sugar! That causes a headache, the same type one gets when one doesn't eat. Since a lot of us use diet drinks to sub for a food craving....
Mr. Politicat's dietician (the one teaching me how to feed him so he doesn't go into fullblown diabetes) tells me that the headaches can be headed off by eating a high protein, complex carb snack with the soda. She recommends whole wheat crackers and string cheese, beef jerky and rice cakes, or similar.
As for the MS rumor... the MS foundation debunked that one in 1999. No link.
