Who's your favourite religious artist/sculptor working in a Christian context?

6. Good answer! I was going to say folk artists who create images that

reflect their faith, whatever it is. There are some very moving pieces done by immigrants for their churches that are simple and humble and marvelous...I am thinking particularly of some I saw in the Norwegian American Museum down in Decorah Iowa; some really beautiful wood carvings made for altarpieces.

2. Michelangelo.

His "Pieta" and "David" are stunning masterworks that take the breath away and make one proud to be human. "Look what we can do!"

"David" is an evil statue, if such a thing can be said to exist.

Because David is not human - he's superhuman. He is the first ubermensch. Traditionally, David iconography reflected the Bible story - that of a little boy taking on a huge giant with just a sling. But this David ain't no little boy - Goliath never had a chance against this colossus. This enforces idea that some people are more fit than others that some people are destined to lead, that those without physical imperfection are select to the fight against "evil," etc.

I remember an old Italian movie where a character walks through the rubble of the Academia immediatly after the liberation of Florence from the Nazis, and waggs his finger at David. He looks around at the destruction and the corpses of Nazis and stares at the statue -- "You did this!"
