I think I've just lost complete respect for Jack Nicholson
http://www.imdb.com/PeopleNews/#1

Ranking the hysteria "right up there with the atomic bomb as events that impacted our culture for the worse", he writes in the 50th anniversary edition of Playboy magazine, "We were moving to a freer society before AIDS. "Most people who investigated this knew that if you were not shooting up or getting f***ed in the heinie, you were as likely to get AIDS as you were to have a safe fall on your head while walking down Wilshire Boulevard. But you could not proselytize this view. The facts were almost useless. You couldn't give a woman the facts and have her respond, 'Oh, all right.'"

3. Oddly enough his latest movie...
is about an aging womanizer who chases after way too young girls.

Jack Nicholson is so yesterday news. He's an old fart past his prime who dates anoexetic chicks like Lara Flynn Boyle

2. OH MY GOSH!!! I saw that earlier today and I was flabergasted
I think Jack Nicholson should spend about 3 months in Sub-Saharan Africa to get an idea of how 'fake' this epidemic is.

I've lost all respect for him and I'm refusing to see anymore of his movies.

18. Umm.
Nicholson's range remains limited compared to the likes of Hoffman, De Niro, or even Anthony Hopkins...

Nicholson is good, but he's not THAT good.

39. hey, it's your opinion
Personally, I think Deniro has gone downhill MAJOR LEAGUE FAST. Hoffman hasn't done a good movie in ages and Hopkins made two lousy sequels to Silence of the Lambs.

Nicholson at least chooses good movies to make.

To say something like this not only completely devoid of empathy compassion and sensitivity - it's also just plain stupid.

He is Melvin Udall.

23. I forgot to make this point in this post
He does not know Adam Sandler or what kind of person he is, as far as I know he hasn't really made outrageous comments. You don't understand my logic, my logic was that by his logic Adam Sandler was a piece of shit because of his opinion that he is "over rated" and "untalented" when he is not exactly selling out crowds or staring in major movies.

I took a wild guess, if he was a movie star I am pretty sure I would've hear about it. Will Pitt sells a couple of books, makes tv appearences, and writes columns and he is a DU celebrity.

15. I wonder
how Jack's good buddy Magic Johnson feels about that statement? I gotta say I wasd pretty shocked to hear such a statement from Nicholson. I had deluded myself into thinking maybe he wasn't the slimeball he so adeptly plays. And, for a bit of evil gossip.... Laura Flynn Boyle is disgusting up close. I was standing next to her while waiting for a screening on the Warners lot a few years back and I swear the girl must apply her makeup with a spatula. She had so much foundation caked on her she looked like she stepped right out of the middle ages. So unnatural. Oh well.

43. the rich wore makeup
They would cake it on, too. It was unpopular to bathe so many women would have layers of cream and powder on their faces. I've been reading lately about courtesans in Italy, juicy stuff! Makeup has been around for a long long time. Ancient Romans, Greeks, Egyptians all wore makeup. Persians and Phoencians, too including one unlucky lady named Jezebel, whose biggest crime seems to be applying some makeup. Now I don't have anything against makeup in general. (Being a big fan of strawberry lip gloss.) Just feel it should enhance what one naturally has, not serve as a mask. If you wanna cover your whole face, why not wear a burqua? But to each his own. Some people like that stuff. My taste favors natural beauty.

Nicholson is still an insensitve fool for saying what he did about aids.

21. Waitaminit.
I don't like Nicholson anyway (lousy actor IMHO) but lets look at the WHOLE quote:

Movie lothario Jack Nicholson has hit out at the AIDS 'hysteria' of the 1980s, claiming the threat of the killer disease was vastly exaggerated. The famed womanizer insists the reports surrounding the first known cases of the deadly disease didn't stop him enjoying sex - but regrets the damaging affect it had on popular culture.

Have we already forgotten about Ryan White and all of the other innocents who were caught up in this? Have we forgotten about clubs shutting down because people were afraid to sweat together on a dance floor (much less screw each other afterward)? Have we forgotten about the paranoia that AIDS could be transmitted on toilet seats? There was an unfounded AIDS hysteria in America in the early 80's, and Nicholson is actually fairly accurate (if somewhat crass) in his description of it. We were all paralyzed with fear of a disease that AT THAT TIME really only existed in the gay and drug communities. Could you get the disease if you weren't part of those communities? Sure, but as Nicholson said: "you were as likely to get AIDS as you were to have a safe fall on your head while walking down Wilshire Boulevard". It could happen, and it DID happen, but it was pretty unlikely. Of course, CONVINCING people of that back then was nearly impossible...there were people who actually believed that AIDS was everywhere and that it signalled the end of humanity (it certainly signalled the end of the free love era).

So what exactly did he say that pissed you off?

24. But that's not the point of what he said
Nicholson was making the point that, for the people who WERE NOT in those risk groups, the risk was seriously exaggeratted and overblown at the time, bordering on outright paranoia in many areas. He's not taking a shot at those groups (and just to be clear, I'm in one myself) or trivializing the disease, he's just making a very factual point that MANY people tried to make at the time, but which was lost in the hype: That the odds of actually getting AIDS outside of the gay community was infinitesimally small at that time.

Today, things have changed. AIDS has crossed the margins and now infects clean hetero's the same as any other population group. In the early 80's though, it was pure, ungrounded fear based on a lack of understanding about the disease.

33. ?
Sorry if that wasn't clear. "Clean hetero's" meant one who is not bi or gay, and who doesn't use drugs. It was a reference to the days when AIDS was seen as a gay disease, or a druggie disease. Now it's an "everyone" disease. The term "risk group" in relation to AIDS no longer exists...you can get it if you're gay, straight, drug using, or clean. Only abstinent people who live their lives in utter isolation are 100% immune to AIDS now.

It's just not who you sleep with - but who your partner has slept with. Maybe I'm a hetero sleeping with another hetero, but what's the history of my partner's or the history of who he/she has slept with.

As my grandmother would always say 'Better to be safe than sorry'. (of course she meant for things in general)

that he didn't say anything all that bad, just phrased it badly, I do need to point out that anal sex is by no means exclusive to homosexuals, and that many, MANY homosexuals don't engage in it.

Damn few sex acts are orientation-specific.
