Tech Help
My computer continues to crash (this program has performed an illegal funtion and must be shut down), and will not shut down properly.
My McAffee (spelling?) Virus protection gives me a "script" warning, but then crashes. My internet connection crashes everytime I connect. WHAT CAN I DO? ANY advice would be helpful. I am currently on my roomies computer.

do you have anything in startup?
In the registry editor, what do you see in the
H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|SOFTWARE|MICROSOFT|Windows|CurrentVersion|Run key?

you have a lots of things running on your computer.

Do you have Kazaa or any other file-sharing programs? Do you leave them open so that you can download music while you are away? There is this thing called spyware which literally floods your computer with tracking devices so websites can see where you travel on the internet. Even if you have deleted all of your cookies, history, and temp internet files, the spyware remains, taking up the ram on your computer.

What you need is to get an anti-spyware program.

There is this program called Ad-Aware. Click here to get it.

go into start/programs/accessories and run scandisk, and then disk defragmenter. this alone could possibly fix the problem.

then back everything up thats on the hard drive that you dont want to lose - onto a cd, or groups of floppy disks. the reason i say this is because a crash may be imminent and its best you have everything that you NEED backed up. dont worry about old programs, just concern yourself with docs/pictures and stuff you cant replace.

then reinstall/update all of your antivirus software. run that software.

you could also go to start/run and then type "msconfig" then go into the startup menu and uncheck any unnecessary programs, look online for unnecessary programs in windows for lists of programs that could be causing problems.

if none of this alone fixes it you should probably reinstall windows using your manufacturers reinstall cd/WIndows cd. in that case all you have to do is make sure everything YOU NEED is backed up and put the disk in and follow the onscreen isntructions

7. What's the exact text of the error message?
both the one at shutdown and the Mcafee error? If the shutdown one references svchost.dll, or winsvcs.dll, you have been infected with the Blaster worm or a variant.
