How many of you would date a conservative
Even if he/she were totally cute, could you look past extreme idiolgical (i dont know if I've spelled that right) differences?

I'm having a crisis of sorts over here, lol...

4. Nope.
Got to have at least a basic consensus on politics, because that's often what the conversation turns to, and I am unwilling to spend every conversation arguing.

6. Well, I married one. Next question.
We elect not to talk about politics. Anyway, she seems to be a conservative in name only; her one issue is abortion, and maybe gay rights. In every other respect, she's a progressive. She thinks B*sh is an idiot, she opposes the war in Iraq, opposes the death penalty, supports strong gun control, and loathes the greedy hypocrites of the 'Christian' far-right.

I love her and she makes me very happy.

Life is strange.

9. Nope. The family is bad enough.
I have a friend who is more middle-of-the-road, but I don't think he's caught on to Shrubya yet. I'd give some of them some time. I didn't catch on until after the Afghanistan war. My blood was still too pumped from 9-11. Right after the terrorist attacks I was ready to grab a gun myself and go blasting away at the perpetrators.

Very early on I noticed Fox wondering if the American people had the "stamina" necessary to support a full-fledged war on terrorism. That had me raising an eyebrow even then. Then when attention focused so swiftly on Iraq, my mouth dropped open. Iraq had nothing to do with the 9-11 attacks. And after Bush's first few crying fits near ground zero, I started to get suspicious. For the first time that I had noticed, the mainstream media was actually a sounding horn for Bush's policies. That REALLY disturbed me. The media was supposed to be liberal (or so I'd heard) or at best unbiased. What the hell was this?

When the media became a horn for Bush, that's when I really started wondering.

Some of these people will never change. They are willfully ignorant. Some will change. They just need the right facts.

10. Depends on how far right
A couple of conservative stances? Sure, esp if it were centered around fiscal policy or the limited government argument.

But socially conservative, no. And to be honest, I probably wouldn't suit him either. It might be ok for a temporary fling, but I wouldn't look for a LTR out of it.

11. Depends
I know somebody who volunteers at a soup kitchen, donates money, has acted as a 'big brother', and is a _really_ good person.

Feed the hungry, clothe the naked type stuff... he's also hardcore religious right.

I don't agree with his politics, but my life would be poorer if I excluded him based soley on his politics.

Don't completely judge somebody based on politics.

14. Maybe...And here's what all it depends upon:
I have been known to fall completely in love with a fellow who described himself as a 'conservative.' Lucky for us both, he's British. What passes for conservative in the U.K. is pretty a great deal more liberal than what passes for a conservative in the U.S. When we sorted through the issues individually, -his feelings were not greatly divergent from mine on most things.

So first, -what makes him think he's conservative? Where do you agree and disagree? If you're both fairly centrist in your views, it may be all but moot. But if there are specific 'hot buttons' either of you have, you should know about them well in advance of taking a romantic plunge.

Second, -is this merely dating to explore an attraction, or are you both already attracted and considering whether to continue seeing each other and risk having it develop into a lifelong companionship? 'Cause if you're not thinking to end up with each other, I'm not sure what difference it makes.

Third, and perhaps most important, -what is the interaction like between you when you're just engaging in friendly chat? One of my closest girlfriends is a dyed-in-the-wool Texas Republican and Rushfan. When we get together to talk, politics only occasionally comes up and usually we tease each other - more with a twinkling amusement than a sarcastic smack. A sense of humour and a respect for one another's inate intelligence can make it work. Trying to convert the heathen will always fail.

16. depends, but probably
First of all, it's unlikely you and your SO are going to see eye-to-eye on every political opinion; you're going to have to agree to disagree. I think it's how you handle that, that's important.

Most conservatives are not finger pointing hysterics who rant and rave about all things liberal. If they were that type, yes, I could see things not working out.

But most likely they'd be more moderate than that and it's an issue you could work around.

Cute, geeky, and female, that's all I ask, dammit.

20. Date, maybe...marry, no way...have always known that part of the reason
my hubby and I are still tight after 22 years together (18 of them married years) is that we do see eye to eye on most political issues, very few disagreements. Our polictical views are based so fundamentally on our spiritual/religious/faith life that I cannot see being married to someone whose outlook on life, the universe and everything was at odds with mine.
We have other differences, but religion and politics are pretty much right on.

21. Take my word for it, apathy is worse

My first wife, who was at heart a fairly liberal person, refused to have anything to do with politics. Wouldn't talk to me about it, wouldn't read about it, completely refused to "get involved". I know she voted, but shudder to think what she was basing her vote on.

As a political junkie I understand Carvill marrying that woman. Impassioned discussion, and disagreement is better than a blank stare and no response.

Couldn't ever do it now. That would be like a Jew dating a Nazi.

Period. End of story.

For me, anyway. Maybe you don't feel quite as hardened towards Bushevik Monsters as I do.

And by the way, Busheviks aren't conservatives, they are Totalitarians.

So maybe I could date a True Conservative, though there are damned few left out there.

23. it's probably different for both sexes
I'm sure a guy would probably be more apt to date a conservative woman than a girl would date a conservative guy.

Considering conservative guys are likely to be more controlling and their views might actually impact your relationship.

30. I once dated a guy in high school
who turned out to be a Republican in later years and told me he wanted to join the CIA. He was a sweetheart in many respects, otherwise. Ironically, he was told by the CIA people that he was persona non grata and could not join since he had taken drugs in the past. I had to laugh a bit at that, although he was actually crushed.

31. Nope, I doubt it.
My ex fancies himself a Green and voted for Nader, I still feel aggravated about that and we had many arguments after the 2000 election. It took him about 6 months to even consider that the election had been stolen. Thing is, I think he's a Green because he thinks it's cool and non-conformist, not because of any beliefs. Well, that's in the past but I do prefer someone who shares my basic ethics and morals which include politics to some extent. However, it would be boring to agree on every issue. Probably the worst would be someone who doesn't care at all about politics and issues.

if i KNOW shes a conservative before i take any sort of interest in her, that pretty much butchers any chance of me overcoming my political boundries. but if i find out after i have a slight interest, it might be worth a shot, as long as shes not a neo-con or wing-nut or something.

39. Depends on whether we're talking fling or relationship
A fling, sure - chemical attraction works no matter what the ideology. But if it's supposed to last after the bra is picked up off the stairs, then I have to be able to talk to them, and the people who call themselves "conservatives" these days (and incidentally, they are NOT conservatives, they are reactionaries) are just not people with whom I can have a reasoned discussion anymore.

It's too bad things have gotten so polarized, but they have. I have no common ground with right-wingers anymore.
