Who here has gotten the Bragging Christmas Cards?
Edited on Tue Nov-18-03 09:27 PM by bleedingheart
You know the ones from friends that do nothing but extoll all the wonderful qualities of their family and go on and on about how much stuff they acquired and how many vacations they took....

Every year my family gets one from a cousin that always has the mother and daughter dressed alike and the same goes for the son and father... very very creepy....(the kids are in college and they still do this) then they send a two page letter detailing every thing that happened to them since the last christmas... I swear they keep a journal just to write the letter.

I am not dissing the letter concept...it is always nice to hear from people...but trying to portray your life as absolute perfection makes me think you're lying...

When the mood catches me I will sometimes write back a letter...one which details all the oddball things...the lice outbreak at my son's daycare ...the time my daughter shoved a lego up her nose...you know..the fun stuff!

The funniest but saddest non-bragging one I got was from my husband's grandparents who listed all their illnesses and the side effects of the drugs and then they made sure to put scripture readings appropriate for each tale... it was sad because they were sick...but you had to laugh because there were lines like..."Al needs new socks so I told Mary to buy him cheap ones from the dollar store because we don't expect to live long and we would hate to waste the money"...

I get about 50 to 70 a year...

In fact its the only time I send a picture of my kids to relatives...but I normally have them pre-printed so I don't have to write anything ...

2. We get a really strange one from a couple we know
The husband's stuff is all upbeat, about his job, and his interests and his young sons and says positive stuff about his wife. Then she writes her half (I call it "the darker side") where you seriously think she needs to be put on anti-depressants. She complains that her husband is "never home" (untrue - he's just not ALWAYS home) and she wanders the wood with her older son and they build fake altars and bless things, and basically she just brings you down. I mean, her husband gave up almost all of his recreational activities for her, and this is what he gets. Last year, she joined the Women in Black, and touted how much more wonderful they were than the noisy anti-war protestors on the opposite corner. That was her ending note.

with their pets on them and nothing else.

11. "Jack got a wonderful job as a caretaker at a Colorado ski lodge...
"We're so excited, 'cause now he can finish his novel. He works on it all the time. I know it's going to be really great.

"Danny is such an imaginative boy! He has a little imaginary friend he calls Tony. All Tony ever says is 'Redrum! Redrum!' Isn't that cute?

"I'm a little bit lonely, what with Jack working so hard, and him and Danny being batshit crazy and everything. But I'm sure everything will turn out all right in the end. I mean, how could anything go wrong in a place as perfect as this?

"Merry Christmas!"

12. I have a friend who gets a really narcissistic, self important bragging
one from a fairly distant friend in another state. We would read it and gag every year until a few years ago when we decided she would write one to this person. We sat there and made up everything. It was a totally fictitious letter - I think we even had her publishing a book and being on Good Morning America. She has never gotten another Christmas update from this woman...

14. My uncle writes those every year...
:eyes:

I would prefer to have contact with family throughout the year, not just a huge letter during the holidays.

15. I get one from an old former friend turned Freeper. Keeping tabs
on what they think. They've become pious Midwestern dorks.

Her politics are horrendous of course, and they brag about them in their Christmas letter. I'm certain they're Rushbots to boot. So it's nice to get such a direct line to what drives the opposition.

I don't say a word, I don't reply, but they're the type of people that keep you on their card list for life.

And that, boys and girls, was how Lil' Georgie W. got his first campaign donors list after all.

Bar's Christmas card list. Poppy even said so.
