10. Everyone's threads die more often than float.

I have had some well thought out threads sink without an answer that I had worked on very hard, yet some rant I throw up because I'm pissed about something takes off. Sometimes it helps to be topical too. Like today all the AARP threads and Bush in London threads are happening.

Even though I've probably started about 50 threads since I became an active poster in April 2001, I've never garnered more than 20 replies to any of these threads, and even then I usually make half of the posts.

20. What pisses me off is

to start a thread and then, 30 minutes later, someone else starts the same thread with the same link. My thread dies and the second one goes on for hours.

Topic lines really matter. I once posted a thread about Nader criticizing Dean that drew well over 100 posts. Don't say "Nader Criticizes Dean" or "Nader Attacks Dean"; say "Nader Bashes Dean" or "Nader Blasts Dean over....(whatever)". Two motivated subgroups automatically go apeshit.

Pro/Anti Peta threads usually survive. Religion is a hot-button issue (liberal Christians are a distinct minority here), as is geographic regionalism (a few people have a deep-seated hatred of the south).

If you really want a heavy response, try defending Zell Miller or Joe Lieberman. People will NOTICE your thread.
