Historically, Shannon Sharpe has established himself as the best receiving tight end in the game's history. But for the moment, he's also at the top of the AFC's offensive heap.
The league will name Sharpe the AFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday, making him the second Bronco to receive the honor this season. Quarterback Jake Plummer earned the award for Week 3 by virtue of passing for two touchdowns, running for another and amassing a 158.3 first-quarter rating as the Broncos dashed to a 21-0 lead and an eventual 31-10 win over Oakland.
Sharpe earned the honor with a seven-reception, 101-yard, three-touchdown game against the Chargers. He scored on the Broncos' sixth offensive play and added 26-yard scoring receptions in the second and third quarters to put the game out of reach; Denver went on to win 37-8, scoring its most lopsided margin of victory in 2003.
The three scores allowed him to become the league's all-time leading touchdown maker among tight ends, with 61 for his career. The late Washington Redskins tight end Jerry Smith previously held the record with 60 touchdowns.
