Popular Hanukkah songs?
Edited on Wed Nov-19-03 11:04 AM by bbernardini
I'm trying to put together a little "holiday sing-along" for a program at the school where I work. We want to include some Hanukkah stuff, but not having grown up in the Jewish faith, I'm not too sure what Hanukkah songs non-Jews might know. There's always the ever-popular "Dreidel Song", which the kids know and love, but one doesn't really cover it, does it? It's also not very specific, holiday-wise. Anybody have any thoughts?

P.S. Adam Sandler is NOT an acceptable suggestion. :)

"There's a Dreidel made out of clay"..

http://www.smart-central.com/HolidayPages/dreidel.htm

I Have A Little Dreidel
Goldfarb

I have a little dreidel.
I made it out of clay.
And when it's dry and ready,
My dreidel I shall play.

Oh dreidel dreidel dreidel,
I made it out of clay.
Oh dreidel dreidel dreidel,
My dreidel I shall play.

It has a lovely body,
With leg so short and thin,
And when it gets all tired,
It drops and then I win.

Oh dreidel dreidel dreidel,
With leg so short and thin,
Oh dreidel dreidel dreidel,
It drops and then I win.

My dreidel's always playful.
It loves to dance and spin.
A happy game of dreidel,
Come play now let's begin.

Oh dreidel dreidel dreidel,
It loves to dance and spin.
Oh dreidel dreidel dreidel,
Come play now let's begin.

I have a little dreidel.
I made it out of clay.
And when it's dry and ready,
My dreidel I shall play.

Oh dreidel dreidel dreidel,
I made it out of clay.
Oh dreidel dreidel dreidel,
My dreidel I shall play.

3. This one is from "The Diary of Anne Frank":
Oh Chanukkah, oh Chanukkah
The sweet celebration
Around the feast we gather
In complete jubilation
Happiest of seasons now is here
Many are the reasons for good cheer
Together, we'll weather
Whatever tomorrow may bring
So hear us rejoicing and merrily voicing
The Chanukkah song that we sing
Hoy!
So hear us rejoicing and merrily voicing
The Chanukkah song that we sing!

Watch the movie to get the melody.

5. Wonderful!
Thanks so much. The tricky bit is finding something (other than the Dreidel Song mentioned above) that all the adults who will be in the audience know as well. Might just have to teach the kids a tune and let the parents fake it.
