Why would anyone use email to communicate?
I don't get it, if you have something to say, call them, or send them a letter. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but it just doesn't make sense to me.

1. Why not?
It's quick, easy, and effective.

Why would anyone use a message board to communicate?

I've gotten really bad at email.

But it's still less stupid than text messaging--there's a full size keyboard, for one thing! :hide:

I guess the question at the root of both of these issues is--why do people feel the need to be in contact with others so much?

I mean, thinking 10 years ago...if I wanted to talk to my boyfriend and I was on the bus or whatever...I managed to wait the half hour until I got home. Today, I'd probably call him (and we're talking my fictional boyfriend, who still hasn't fixed my damn leak!). Why? Instant gratification?

Don't know.

5. About this...
I guess the question at the root of both of these issues is--why do people feel the need to be in contact with others so much?

That question is really not at the root of my use of email at all. The people I email the most are my family back home in Minnesota. I don't get to SEE them more than once or twice a year (once for my siblings and twice for my parents), so I don't think there's anything unusual about needing to be in contact with them other ways. I rarely email people I see/talk to frequently.

24. Oh no, LOL, that is an Indian actor.
Named Shah Rukh Khan. He's actually the biggest movie star in the world, westerners don't really know him though.

I have him there so I can look at him while I'm at DU, LOL!

Lotsa pictures at:

http://www.vluvshahrukh.com/

I've always loved Aryan looking men -- blond with blue eyes -- but he is really adorable.

Here's another cutey pie, my brown haired, brown eyed grandson:

Maybe he'll grow up to be a movie star! (He's only five, but loves the movies Grandma and Grandpa take him to...)

Thanks for the information.

Your grandson is adorable. I definitely see movie star potential!!

It's interesting that you mentioned liking Aryan men, LOL-- Shah Rukh Khan's son's name is Aryan!

I like all kinds of men, but I'm slightly partial to dark haired caucasians--and I still find SRK to be the dreamiest man ever. Sigh. And he dances. :loveya: :loveya: :loveya:

I've been to vluvshahrukh many, many times, LOL.

Edited on Sat Nov-12-05 04:02 PM by China_cat
And fairly poor. Email is cheap and I don't have to struggle to hear what's being said.

We also have family in Europe. A letter can take as much as 6 weeks to get here, telephone calls can be iffy at best when you can't hear to begin with and the person you're talking to doesn't speak good English.

Email has been a way for me to finally be able to keep in timely touch with all the family.

6. I have a bit of a hearing problem, too
Email is such a lifesaver for me. I can carry on a decent phone conversation when it's quiet, there's no significant background noise and the line is nice and clear, but how often do the stars align in such a way to allow that to happen?

The free part's good, too. :D

14. I didn't use to use email as much as I do now
but since I got rid of my landline and bought a cell (pay as you go) I use email for as much contact as possible. Simply because it's free. It's the most cost efficient way.

23. Because it's archived, for one thing.
An oral conversation is likely to be ephemeral, but e-mail, like other written communication, can be forever. That e-mail is delivered much more quickly and easily is a point in its favor. It'll never replace talking on the phone, or snail mail, perhaps, but it's a unique way to communicate with its own flavor.

It's easier to talk to some people via email, they can't ignore you or talk over you that way. I have a lot of very talkative friends.

28. email is free
email is free, a call or a letter costs money, plus the phone call puts a demand on their time, email is courteous and they can answer the email at their own convenience instead of mine

i double love email when i'm many time zones away from home & don't have to worry abt waking up my friends and family to let them know i'm still alive, they can just pick up the note in my email!
