I suggest the Hippo.

Why?

Hippos are mostly fat and muscle and all they do to keep themselves alive is eat all day long. They also have bad tempers and kill humans more regularly then any other animal in Africa. The males to mark their territory defecate and spin their tales at the same time to spread their waste throughout the water.

Republicans share many of these same qualities, they are bad tempered, they like to consume large amounts green money. The like to start wars that kill people and I'm not going to comment about the "males, marking their territory" factoid, but I'd like to nominate Rush L., John Ashcroft, GW, and Tom Delay for my inspiration

Parasites are good suggestions, too, but they would probably be hard to illustrate in a logo.

Another possibility is the pig - it's instantly recognizeable and is commonly used to represent greed and waste. There's also a strong Animal Farm connection.

I use a yellow pig to represent the National Education Association - yellow because the cowards don't lift a finger to help teachers or children.

I was thinking just this thing earlier today at work. The elephant is too marvelous and beautiful a creature for the likes of the GOP. I was thinking a pig, but pigs are smart animals and don't deserve to be insulted like that. I think the new Republican mascot should be a big steaming pile of elephant turd.
