I was running my staff meeting this afternoon with most participants attending via conference call. Next thing the fire alarm goes off, and we evacuate 600+ people out into the parking lot to the designated staging areas.
Which isn't such a big deal ...
EXCEPT IT WAS FUCKING POURING/SNOWING AT THE TIME!
Nothing like standing in falling wet slush in 30+ degree weather waiting for the all-clear :mad:

... and pulled the emergency "shut the water off" lever (good thing). The loss of water pressure in the sprinkler system triggered the alarm.

Somebody pulled the fire alarm in my dorm at about 3:30 am. It was a prank of course. So 300 plus students are hanging around outside waiting for the all clear. It was probably in the 40s with a light drizzle, which wouldn't have been bad except there were people out there in their bed clothes. It's also finals week and I imagine not a few people were pissed because they had a final this morning.

Most new systems will ID the location of the source (pull station, dectector) and monitor the smoke through analog sensors in the area. In this way, a false alarm condition is not triggered, just a trouble signal.
Interestingly, the manufacturer that I used to work for was awarded a huge contract from a chip foundry....the primary reason was that our technology didn't trigger due to false alarms. Each false alram condition meant that inprocess chips were scrapped, resulting in 100s of thousands of dollars of scrapped parts.
New fire alarm sensors are even hooked into the building HVAC systems and can be used to balalnce heat/cooling requirements.
