Barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen? |
|
I never understood why 'barefoot' is on that list. What exactly does being barefoot signify? Lack of mobility? Servile status?

I think. If one can't buy her own shoes, she certainly can't support herself, much less kids.
That's my guess, anyway.

2. I think lack of mobility |
|
like you don't need shoes because you have no reason to leave the house.
That's how I always took it anyway.

I know that when I was pregnant I couldn't reach my feet to put anything on, and now that I'm a mom I don't have time to put anything on my feet.

5. I always thought it meant servile status. |

This is an old saying from a time when men believed that a woman's place was in the home. So why would she need shoes if she wasn't going anywhere.

11. I'm sure there is a way to check when a saying originated. |
|
It sounds cute when you're only teasing.
But to most of us - it can raise the hackles on the back of our neck because we can remember when it wasn't said in a joking manner.
Sadly in some places it's still thought of as a way of life.

I guess that makes me a sicko. I'll go see about finally using one of those four free annual visits I am supposed to use (but never have) to a shrink. I bet the shrink will need a shrink after that!

19. I always thought it had to do with foot swelling and comfort |
|
Edited on Mon Nov-14-05 01:00 PM by dr.strangelove
When using the term "barefoot and pregnant" and adding "in the kitchen" I think it becomes an attack on women who choose to work during and after pregnancy. Without that last kitchen term, I always thought it was a warm (and positive) statement on pregnancy. My experience on this has been that while pregnant (more so in the last trimester) my wife can not tie her shoes without help and her feet swell quite a bit. I thought the term was a kind reference to this little "joy" associated with the hormones and body changes of pregnancy. I know my wife enjoyed being home with her feet in slippers or barefoot rather than wear socks or shoes. It was more comfortable.

According to her, the full quote is "Barefoot in the winter, pregnant in the summer and in the kitchen, where she belongs"
She says this is the old view of the proper place and role of women.

That usually went along with that also.
However, on topic, if one is naked, they usually tend to be also barefoot as it is, so I have always thought that was sort of redundant.
