Anyone make Challah Bread? |

Can I add buttermilk or would that be against the Hebrew Laws?

1. I assume you are not Jewish, therefore Jewish law |
|
and/or customs would not apply, unless you intended to serve it to observant Jews.
Many people put a lot of different things in their challah. I don't think buttermilk, even for observant Jews, is forbidden.

...sounds a bit wild.
I love a good matzobrie, but I like mine with powdered sugar and lemon juice...

6. I have two Aunts on my Mothers side of the family |
|
They were both Jewish and they live in Florida but I don't think that they are alive anymore so I can't ask them.
I have to make Challah bread and I was short on eggs so I added buttermilk in the place of two of the egg yolks that I was short of. It came out wonderful and very soft.

The best bet is to just use a kosher recipe... Here's one: http://www.koshercooking.com/recipes/everyday/challa.htmlI'm not sure challah would even taste right with milk added to it. When in doubt, ask a rabbi.

4. If made with buttermilk... |
|
...you could not serve it to observant Jews during a meal that included meat.
Generally, challah is made with parve (not meat, not milk) ingredients so it can be served with either.
Frankly, I have never had bread made with buttermilk. Is this something you have tried before?
