What kind of digital camera do you own?
My wife and I really want to get one, but they've changed so much since the last time we went looking for them. What do you suggest. One DUer posted a beautiful hummingbird pic taken with his/her Canon digital.

Just looking for suggestions.

6. $5,790 is a high price to pay (lowest today via google) - but it is nice
I'll wait 3 or 4 years for the ebay price.

2. I have a little Canon Elph.
I love it. It's only 2MP, but it's great for e-mailing, and it makes great 4x6 prints. I love its small size and metal body. So far, so good.

7. Cheap yet good
For whatever reason a lot of people seem to overlook the Samsung range of cameras.

I have a Samsung Digimax 201. It's only 2.1 megapixels, but it has a lot of features and the quality is excellent. Picked it up off amazon for 129. If you'd like sample pictures, let me know and I'd be happy to share some.

8. Just bought a Canon EOS 10D
It was expensive but for all the things I need it for it was well worth the cost since I use it for my business and for pleasure. I use to spend about as much for professional photos for my catalog every year.

The Canon Rebel is also a good choice but still not cheap. Just depends on what sort of things you want to use your camera for.

10. That was me who posted the hummingbird...
I use a Cannon G2--it's about a year old now, but I paid about $600 for it, and it came with two memory cards and a case.

Here is where I bought it: www.pictureline.com

I am still VERY satisfied with my camera--I won't update for five years or more...really like it.

Takes great, 4-megapixel pictures but there's an annoying delay between pressing the button and snapping the picture. I would not recommend it. Consumer Reports lists the Kodaks as good buys.

13. better than it's price indicates.... HP photosmart 320
I'm stunned at how good this camera is - it takes very good 8x10s (photo quality).

I just used it to archive the postcards my family sent each other in the 1st decade of the 20th century. The pencil and faded ink text is perfectly legible.

It's a 2.1 megapixel and went for under 200 at Target (If I can't have a really good one, then I'll have a snapshot camera)

High quality glass lens, 5 megapixel, takes astoundingly great pictures...

Higher-end Sony or Nikon would be brands to look for. Forget the others. IMHO. Even Kodak.

19. Whatever you get, make sure it has a hot shoe for an additional flash
and threads on the housing for additional lenses.

ON my G2, I can use an add-on flash and any kind of lens I want because the lens housing is threaded for add ons.

20. Kodak DX4330...........
love it. With the optional dock it makes transfering pictures idiot proof (to DumpGump this is a BIG plus). 3.2 Megapixel with 10X digital zoom, up to 12 secs. digital stream with sound, under $200 on the net. I thought it was a great deal.

Add a bigger memory stick, and you can get up to 16 minutes of video (w. sound).

Bias Alert.

I also work for Kodak.

Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 07:27 AM by soothsayer
Check Steves-Digicams.com for a great run down on many of the cameras out there. A wealth of info.

My camera takes fabulous pics and is a breeze to work. BUT it's sized like a regular camera (but lighter) cuz of it's macho lens.

About $400 or so. The newer model has 5 megapixels and costs about $100 or so more I think.

24. unhappy with a NIKON COOLPIX880
the viewing window is lousy - outdoors you just point it and hope for the best

pictures are good, however - and there are plenty of user options

but that lousy viewing window would keep me from purchasing another NIKON digital

34. Agree re: viewfinder, but Coolpix 880 is a great camera.
Since I spent so much money on a camera that's terrific in every other way, and perfect for me, I adapted.

27. I have a Sony Cyber-shot P-72
It shoots at 3.2 megapixels, is pretty compact, uses rechargeable AA batteries and has a close-up mode. Although it's not bad, if you have a a few extra bucks, I would go with the Canon G4 or G5. I have access to this camera at work and am much happier with it. Since I take my personal camera to a lot of protests, I was a little reluctant to spend too much money in case something would happen.

I shot these with the Sony

Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 10:41 AM by SoCalDem
I ordered it from Kodak's website and it came with the bag and dock :)
It's easy enough for a dummy like me to use.. I had a casio before and HATED it..

Took these Tahiti pics with it

The pics with fire came out shitty because there was a breeze and they got all wiggly, but the others came out just fine

I've had 2 Nikon SLRs for years. And i was reluctant to get into digital. So I did a ton of research and finally decided on this camera. It's incredible. Best camera for the money. The pictures are remarkable. Here are two great places to do homework on cameras:

http://www.cnet.com (great for shopping for a camera, too. I savet $200 bucks shopping here)

and:
http://www.dpreview.com (very extensive camera reviews/tests)

Good luck!
