Who is this Gretchen Wilson chick? |
|
I tivo'd the Country Music Awards and watched them last night and Gretchen Wilson performed a song called, "I Don't Feel Like Loving You Today" and it just floored me - she was wonderful!
I want to buy her CD but I don't know much about her. Anyone else here like her - or not?

1. She of "Redneck Woman" and "I'm here for the Party" fame. |
|
I really like her voice, but her songs really don't do anything for me. Too much forced faux trashiness. Just my $.02. She's popular though.

And almost all of her singles involve booze, or sex, or parties, or getting drunk, or doing hillbilly things. It's just tiresome and boring. She'd be a good regular on Blue Collar TV though.

She mostly straddles that line between country and country-rock, although some of her stuff is stone country. I like her, but not enough to rush out and buy her disks.

3. Her first album was really big |
|
The breakthrough single "Redneck Woman" annoyed me quite a bit, but I think did very well on account of country music fans liking her as an alternative to the overly slick, overly made-up female artists whose country-pop dominates radio. I did like the references to keeping your Christmas tree lights up all year long (I'm white trash enough to identify with that) but highly doubted she knew the word to every Charlie Daniels song... She did redeem herself a bit in my book with the old-school sounding "When I Think About Cheatin'" but I don't remember anything else from that album.
I think her new album is also doing pretty well. I guess from what I've heard of her she's not one of my favorites but she is preferable to a lot of what's coming out of Nashville, and seems to be at least more genuine than a lot of today's country artists (though I agree with the above poster's point about "forced trashiness") so I give her credit for that.

10. You hit it pretty much. |
|
Her appeal is shes not one of the over done slick looking artists. I would not say her music was or contained forced trashiness. She sings about what she knows is all. She grew up poor in a white trash atmosphere and thats what you get. I think it's more honesty than forced.
Personally i am indifferent to her music, though both my ladies enjoy her to some extent.

4. Buy Here For The Party |
|
That one is full of good songs, and at least the ones like "Redneck Woman" seem genuine. The new album is uneven, though you're right -"I Don't Feel Like Loving You Today" is one of the best country songs I've heard.

She’s a redneck woman; she ain’t no high class broad. She’s a product of her raising she says “hey y’all” and “yee haw” She keeps her Christmas lights on her front porch all year long. She knows all the words to every Tanya Tucker song!

12. She even chews tobaccy |
|
Cain't get much more redneck than that.
Actually, I thought she was kind of attractive until I heard that part. Somehow a big wad of chew in a woman's mouth just doesn't do it for me.

And though I hate country and that fucking "Redneck Woman" song. Wilson really is about the only thing in country next Amanda Wilkinson and the Corb Lund band worth a damn.
