Poll question: Green Bean Casserole: Essential Side Dish or Thanksgiving Travesty?
According to a statistic I made up in my own head, 97.3 percent of Americans have tasted that holiday concoction of green beans (often canned), cream o' mushroom soup (Campbell's), and French's crispy fried onions.

So, whaddya think? Will you be partaking this year or would you rather eat what's left in your dog's bowl?

1. I love it.
I'm hoping I can concoct some sort of no-dairy version this year so I can have some.

21. Are the French's fried onions vegan?
If you can use those, faking the rest should be pretty easy.
Good luck!

24. I have no idea.
I'll have to go to the regular grocery and look, the ingredient list isn't on their website.

3. A staple of any Thanksgiving dinner.
Pass the beans please!! Seriously, I could do without cranberry sauce, because I've never really liked it, but I NEED my beans at TG.

Let's have a contest
Make a dish of it and see how many different functions you can take it to.

6. I live in North Dakota
There will be at least two variations of it at every function from now until New Years day. People love their casseroles here.

16. Definitely has to be real cranberry sauce, not the jelly crap!
If I wanted cranberry Jello, I'd fucking buy Cranberry Jello (do they make such a thing?)

7. Ugh. Just seeing it makes me gag...
On the plus side, my boyfriend and I are in the middle of breaking up, apparently, so there's a good chance I won't have to go to his parents' house and see it this year.

"Would you like some green bean casserole and some milk to go with it?"

Uh.........no, but thanks.

8. A lot of nostalgia for me, but I can take it or leave it, flavor-wise.
My mom makes it every year -- she's not the chef in the family (my dad is, and my sister and I both cook a lot too) so this sort of contribution is important to her.

Sometime, I want to go gourmet...fresh green beans, cream, wild mushrooms, carmelized onions...to see what happens.

9. I love green beans
but see no need to mix them up with so much other stuff. And I can't imagine serving canned green beans at a holiday meal. Fresh only!

20. I'm right there with ya sister.
Fresh green beans are delicious all by themselves, or maybe with some olive oil, sesame seeds and salt/pepper. No need to sully them with the sludge that comes out of a Campbell's soup can.

10. We're trying a "scratch" version of it this year
It probably won't be as good, though it still does call for one canned ingredient - the most important one - the onions.

15. I started my own family tradition when I was a kid
I thought the casserole sounded like a disgusting concept. So I ate the can of french fried onions, and problem solved!. And I actually got away with this several years in a row.

Of course that was when grocery stores actually closed for Thanksgiving.
