Need Advice: How do I apply for a new job while maintaining my old one? |
|
You know what I mean...? How do I do make a move without the current employer finding out I am looking for new work?

1. Fax your resume and cover letter while everyone else is at lunch |

when it comes time to ask for references and such,....how do you balance the potential NEW employers talking with the old ones without it getting awkward....does that make sense?

3. That takes place in every job change, don't sweat it |

I don't think there's a "permanent file" on you that gets passed around. I've changed jobs 8 times and very rarely do they even call the references I put on the application. My present company claims they don't give references, they just confirm that the person works here.

Tell your prospective employer that you do not want them contacting you current employer. They will completely understand and might only contact them to make sure you really do work there. I've never had an employer call a reference on my resume. They only did a background check to make sure I worked where I said I worked. Most of the time, they hire another company to do that too.

6. yeah I hear you on that.... |

I'm jumped jobs 3 times in the last 3 years and have gotten at least a 20% pay raise each time. Now I'm making more than double what I was making only 2.5 years ago. Don't be afraid to move companies!
good luck, taught.

7. That's not always such a good move. |
|
The prospective employer sometimes assumes there is another reason you don't want the current employer contacted. It's a tough call.
