17. Well, really only the weekday job has empty beds
The weekend job doesn't, although it has comfy couches that would serve just as well. However I wouldn't put the clients in danger by sleeping when I'm supposed to be watching out for their welfare. In the past a staff did that and someone died as a result.

24. One is working with adults who have mental illnesses
This is the easier of the two jobs where the clients are fairly capable but still require some supervision. I have 17 clients in 5 houses under my care. I do rounds four times a night, enforce agency policies and rules, deal with any emergencies and attend to any needs they may have.

The other is working with adults who have developmental disabilities. The particular ones I work with are profoundly disabled and need significant care and attention. I have to check them every half-hour during sleep hours, change adult diapers, and attend to any other needs that arise as well, plus do the morning care.

28. They are
They can involve verbal and physical abuse from the clients, but fortunately I've had tons of training (plus my college education) so I'm well prepared to deal with that. There are plenty of rewards as well, mainly the intrinsic reward of knowing I'm helping the clients lead better lives.

What's most stressful is the crappy pay--having such responsibility and getting little more than one would for stacking toilet paper at Wal-Mart. It's dehumanizing, really. I didn't go into this field to make money, but I would like to make a living wage.

29. I know what you mean
it is such an important job (like being a nurse in an senior home) but the pay is so crappy, no one wants to do it. And I know it is hard work, physically and mental

30. Another problem with the low pay
Is that we end up getting a lot of sub-par staff. Sometimes there are staff who come because they are truly dedicated and interested in helping the clients, but much of the time they are just people looking to make money the easiest way they can. They come in, do as little as they can and often leave as much work as they can for the other staff. They end up making things that much harder for everyone else, and can be a danger to the clients on top of it all. However, it's not like great people are going to swarm in with the pay they offer (and the state keeps cutting the budgets every chance they get).

31. Here in Germany
we pay nursing care insurance. It is taken off our paycheck. Still, when we are old, we have to pay a bunch of money to get into a nursing home and the nurses get a lousy pay. Now, where is all that money????

Last night when I was going upstairs to read, I started to give Call Me Wesley a little kiss, and he says, "You don't hate me because I'm so popular on DU now that I have 600 posts, do you?" :spray:  He attributes his ever-growing "popularity" to his username. :eyes:

(The "I'm more popular than you" thing is an inside joke with us, since we're both vehemently anti-cliqueish, anti-bandwagon, anti-popularity. )
